LBSU Opens Big West Action Against UCR on ESPN3, Travels to CSUN
The Long Beach State women's volleyball team opens up Big West Conference action this week as the Beach host UC Riverside on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. The match will be on ESPN3. Following the conference opener, Long Beach State will travel to CSUN for a Saturday, Sept. 22 contest at 7 p.m. 

About The Beach
• Long Beach State closed out the preseason with a pair of wins over Lamar and Fresno State at the LBSU Mizuno Invitational.
• The Beach are now 8-5 overall and have won five of their last six matches.
• Long Beach State leads the league in blocks per set with 2.30. Both Emma Kirst and YiZhi Xue lead the way with 1.06 and 1.00 blocks per set, respectively.
• The Beach have been hot at the service line this season racking up 80 service aces on the year thus far. Hailey Harward has paced LBSU with 0.50 aces per set. 
• In addition to leading the team in aces, Harward also sets the tone offensively with 2.96 kills per set. Behind her are Kashauna Williams (2.75) and Tyler Spriggs (2.23).
• Freshman Allison Martinez had a breakout performance last week highlighted by a career-high 12 kill effort against Fresno State. She slammed her 12 kill on 15 swings, while committing just one attack error for a .733 attack percentage. She finished the week hitting .577 and was named Big West Conference Freshman of the Week.
• Carly Aigner-Swesey and Mina Andjelkovic have settled into splitting time at setter this season. Aigner-Swesey is averaging 8.43 assists per set, while Andjelkovic owns a 4.83 clip.

Scouting the Highlanders
• UC Riverside comes into the match against Long Beach State with a 5-6 overall record.
• The Highlanders have struggled as of late as they have dropped five of their last six matches.
• During that span, UC Riverside's lone win came at the hands of Idaho in a five-set win.
• Kaiuani Ahuna is the Highlanders' leading scorer as she has amassed 91 kills for an average of 5.25 kills per set, which is second in the conference. 
• Chelsea Doyle is the team's setter as she has dished out 10.00 assists per set this season, while also adding 3.48 digs per set, and 0.61 blocks per set.
• At the net, the Highlanders are led by Yuliya Ushakova who has posted 37 total blocks to average 0.80 per set.

Series vs. UC Riverside
Long Beach State and UC Riverside will meet for the 51st time in program history. The Beach lead the all-time series 46-4 and have won the last 13 meetings. The Highlanders will be looking for their first win over LBSU since 2011.

Scouting the Matadors
• CSUN is 4-8 on the year and looking to snap a three-match losing skid.
• The Matadors have lost their last three matches to then-No. 13 Washington (3-0), Boise State (3-0), Portland (3-1).
• Offensively, the Matadors are led by Aeryn Owens who averages 4.13 kills per set, while adding 2.11 digs and 0.43 blocks per set.
• The Matadors platoon two setters in Hannah Merjil (4.98 assists per set) and Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker (4.47 assists per set).
• Defensively, Kristey Markle controls the backrow with 3.38 digs per set, while Morgan Salone guards the net with 0.79 blocks per set.

Series vs. CSUN
Long Beach State and CSUN will go head-to-head for the 79th time in program history and the Beach hold the series lead 54-24. The Beach have won seven of the last eight matches. The two teams split the series a year ago, as the Matadors won in four at the Matadome and the Beach won in four at the Pyramid.

BWC Honors
Allison Martinez was named Big West Conference Freshman Player of the Week after she helped lead Long Beach State to a pair of wins last week at the LBSU Mizuno Invitational.

Martinez finished the week with 18 kills, five blocks and three digs, while hitting a sizzling .577 (18-3-26). She had a breakout performance against Fresno State as she hit an impressive .733 after knocking down 12 kills on 15 swings while committing just one attack error.

The 6-foot outside hitter from Montebello, Calif., helped the Beach close out the preseason with back-to-back victories as they head into Big West Conference action with an 8-5 mark.

On the year, Martinez is hitting .370 which ranks her second in the league.

Long Beach State hits the road for a pair of matches along the central coast as the Beach travel to UC Santa Barbara on Friday, September 28, before taking on Cal Poly on Saturday, September 29. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m.
