Long Beach State Drops 3-0 Contest at No 18 Oregon

The Beach put up a fight, but fall to the nationally ranked Ducks

EUGENE, Ore. – Long Beach State battled, but eventually dropped a 3-0 [14-25, 17-25, 18-25] decision to No. 18 Oregon on Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena at the Oregon Classic.
The Beach (3-3) strung together several good runs throughout the three-set match, but eventually fell to the Ducks (3-2) after Oregon out-hit Long Beach State .270 to .101.
Long Beach State opened up the match on a 3-0 run and fought Oregon through four ties in the first set, before the Ducks went on a 4-0 run to take the lead for good (9-8) on a kill by Willow Johnson. The Beach were unable to come back as the Ducks jumped out in front by five (15-10). Oregon extended its lead and went on to win set one by a score of 25-14.
Despite the setback in the first set, the Beach came out strong in the second and after falling behind 3-0, chipped away and knotted the score at 7-7 after ratting off three-straight points. The Beach and the Ducks traded points back and forth before Oregon used a 7-0 run to break the set open and take a 22-15 advantage. From there, the Ducks would win, 25-17.
Oregon opened the third set on a 10-1 run and held the lead the rest of the way. Long Beach State did its best to close the gap, but the Beach were unable to rally. The Ducks pushed it to match point, 24-14, but the Beach would not go quietly. Long Beach State tallied four straight points highlighted by an ace by Mina Andjelkovic, before dropping the third set, 25-18.
Long Beach State was led offensively by Hailey Harward's seven-kill effort. Carly Aigner-Swesey collected 18 assists, while Andjelkovic added seven at setter. Libero Carly Hill led the Beach with 12 digs, while Harward added 10.
The Beach look to get back on the winning track Saturday, September 1, when they play Utah Valley at 11 a.m. in the Oregon Classic.
