LONG BEACH – Behind a career night from junior middle blocker YiZhi Xue, the Long Beach State women's volleyball defeated Seattle in the 2018 home opener in four sets [25-17, 25-18, 19-25, 25-18] inside the Walter Pyramid on Tuesday night.
Xue led the way for the Beach (2-2) with a career-best 15-kill performance while hitting a sizzling .778 (15-1-18) on the evening. Her hot-hitting, along with freshman setter Carly Aigner-Swesey running a balanced offense, led to Long Beach State posting a .353 attack percentage as the Beach rolled past Seattle (1-2).
In addition to her offensive attack, Xue also contributed defensively posting a season-high seven blocks (one solo, six block assists) to led the Beach at the net. Long Beach State opened the match on a 10-0 run highlighted by an ace off the hands of junior Hailey Harward. With a commanding lead, the Beach never looked back as they out-hit the Redhawks .391 to .143 in the frame en route to a 25-17 win.
The Beach rode their momentum into the second set and posted their highest attack percentage of the match as they hit an impressive .448 (16-3-29), while limiting the Redhawks to .200 hitting (12-7-25). With the offense clicking, Long Beach State led by as many as seven points (13-6) and held the lead for the remainder of the set. The Beach would go on to take the second set by a score of 25-18.
Seattle kept Long Beach State off balance in the third set, limiting the Beach to .167 hitting (10-5-30). The Redhawks managed to force a fourth set after defeating the Beach by a score of 25-18.
Long Beach State bounced back in the fourth set and turned in another offensive explosion connecting on 19 kills on 34 swings, while committing just five miscues. With their offense back in full swing, LBSU took a 3-2 lead on a Xue kill and never relinquished it. The Beach would cruise to a 25-18 win and finish the match with three players in double figures as Kashauna Williams and Tyler Spriggs each recorded 11 kills.
The Beach played well on both sides of the ball as they received strong defensive efforts from freshman libero Carly Hill and Harward who recorded 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Long Beach State will host the Shanghai Pro Team Wednesday, August 29 at 7 p.m. in the Pyramid for an exhibition match, before traveling to Eugene, Ore., for the Oregon Classic which runs from Friday, August 31 – Saturday, September 1.
