Long Beach State Earns 3-1 Victory Over Portland State Total team effort leads to first win of the season

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team utilized a solid team effort on Saturday night at Viking Pavilion as the Beach defeated Portland State, 3-1 [25-22, 25-18, 11-25, 25-20] to collect their first win of the 2018 season.
The Beach (1-2) hit .272 in the match and had three players reach double figure kills as they won the first two sets before finishing the Vikings (1-2) off in the fourth.
Junior Hailey Harward led the offensive attack with her third double-double in as many matches as she recorded a team-best 16 kills to go along with 10 digs. Joining Harward in double-figures were senior Tyler Spriggs and junior YiZhi Xue who contributed 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Spriggs was efficient as she knocked down her 13 kills on 27 attempts without committing an error for a .481 attack percentage.
Long Beach State's offense was paced by freshman Carly Aigner-Swesey who earned the start at setter. Aigner-Swesey dished out 52 assists. She also added seven digs in the first start of her collegiate career.
The Beach played well on both sides of the ball with the defense totaling 56 digs and 9.0 team blocks. Freshman Carly Hill led the backrow with 16 digs, while Kashauna Williams posted 11. At the net, Long Beach State was led by Emma Kirst, Harward, and Xue who each put up four block assists.
Portland State opened the match with four straight points before jumping out to a 9-5 lead. However, Long Beach State would chip away at the hosts' lead and use a 5-1 run of its own to even the score at 18-all forcing the Vikings to call for a timeout. Following the break in action, the Beach went up 20-19 on a kill by Kirst and never looked back as they would take the first set, 25-22.
The second set, again, saw Portland State take an early lead, but once again Long Beach State put together a rally and knotted the frame at 10-all. The two teams exchanged leads for the next several point, but it was Long Beach State that would come out victorious after using a 4-1 run to close out the set for a 25-18 victory.
The Beach struggled in the third set and were limited to just .029 hitting. The Vikings capitalized on Long Beach State's offensive setback and went on a 10-1 run to open up a 21-7 lead. Portland State would eventually go on to win by a score of 25-11.
Long Beach State was not fazed and came back out in the fourth and took a 10-8 lead. Following a few points of back and forth scoring, the Beach rattled off three straight points to go up 22-19 leading to a Vikings timeout. The break didn't stop the Beach as they closed out the set on a 6-1 run to win 25-20 en route to a four-set victory.
The Beach returns home and hosts Seattle in the home opener on Tuesday, August 28 at 7 p.m. inside the Walter Pyramid.
