Box Score
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team put up a fight, but eventually dropped a 3-0 [23-25, 23-25, 15-25] contest to Portland State on Friday night inside Viking Pavilion.
The Beach (0-2) were led by junior Hailey Harward who collected a double-double – her second of the day – as she led the team with 10 kills while adding 10 digs. She also notched a pair of service aces and two blocks, while hitting .348 (10-2-23).
As a team, Long Beach State hit .123 (37-22-122), while Portland State (1-0) hit .250 (40-13-108) in the match.
The Vikings used a 6-0 run in the first set to take an 11-7 lead, but the Beach would fight back and go on an 8-0 run. In the midst of that run, Megan Kruidhof slammed down a kill to give Long Beach State a 19-18 lead. LBSU eventually went up 21-18 in the first, but Portland State came back and took a 25-23 win.
The second set saw the Beach jump out in front early with a 5-0 lead. However, Vikings countered with a 5-0 run of their own to even the score at 5-all. The trading points would be a trend throughout the frame as the two teams exchanged points until they found themselves deadlocked at 23-all. With the score knotted, Portland State took advantage of back-to-back LBSU attack errors to win, 25-23.
Portland State took an early 3-0 lead in the third set and never relinquished it as the Vikings held the lead throughout the frame. Long Beach State did its best to stay close, but the Vikings kept the Beach at bay and went on to win 25-15.
Despite the loss, Long Beach State out-blocked Portland State 9.5 to 7.0. The Beach were led by Emma Kirst at the net as she put up six block assists in the match. Kruidhof added three, while Harward, Mina Andjeljovic and YiZhi Xue each recorded two blocks.
Andjelkovic also dished out 29 assists, while Carly Hill collected 16 digs.
