LONG BEACH -- The Long Beach State women's tennis team closed out their six-match homestand with a 4-3 victory over Dartmouth on Friday afternoon at Rhodes Tennis Center.
The Beach have now won four out of their last five matches to improve to 7-6 on the year. Meanwhile, the Big Green drop to 7-8 on the year.
Down 1-0 after dropping the doubles point to open the match, Long Beach State senior Lena Pacholski kick-started the Beach's singles competition with a convincing win over Kristina Mathis, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1. Mathis had come into the match against Pacholski after having knocked off Pepperdine's Luisa Stefani, who is ranked No. 25, on Tuesday.
Pacholski's key victory sparked a comeback as the Beach went on to win the next three games to clinch the match.
Following Pacholski's victory, sophomore Natalia Munoz handed Julie Schroeder a loss as Munoz rolled past her 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. With the Beach up 2-1, freshman Lalita Devarakonda collected a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Abigail Chiu at No. 4, while Sadaf Sadeghvaziri put the match away with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) win over Chuyang Guan at No. 5.
With the Beach having clinched the match, 4-1, Dartmouth managed to picked up a couple of wins at courts three and six to make it a 4-3 final.
Long Beach State hits the road next week as it returns to Big West Conference action. The Beach will play at Cal Poly on Friday, March 30 at noon, before taking on UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, March 31 at 11 a.m.
