LONG BEACH – The Long Beach State women's tennis team showed its determination as the Beach pushed BYU to the brink and earned a 4-3 victory on Friday at Rhodes Tennis Center.
The Beach improved to 2-1 on the year as they handed the Cougars' (2-1) their first loss of the season.
"We fought for the win over a very feisty opponent today," Long Beach State head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "I'm very proud of our team."
Long Beach State started the day winning the doubles point after the duos of Lena Pacholski / Natalia Munoz and Lalita Devarakonda / Sadaf Sadeghvaziri picked up victories. Pacholski/Munoz won 6-3 over Mayci Jones / Kate Cusick, while Devarakonda/Sadeghvaziri defeated Anastasia Abramyan / Taylah Beckman, 7-5.
In singles action, Cuski defeated Maren Helgo to even the score at 1-1. Then BYU took a 2-1 lead after Polina Malykh beat Georgia Gulin 6-4, 6-2. However, Pacholski would even the match score after collecting a 6-4, 7-5 win over Jones.
With the match tied 2-2, BYU took the lead after Madeline Almeida defeated Devarakonda 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. But Sadeghvaziri would bring the Beach back into the game with a 7-6 (8), 5-7, 6-3 win over Samantha Smith.
Meanwhile, Munoz and Abramyan were battling it out on court two after Munoz took set one by a score of 6-4 before Abramyan won the second set 6-2. The two fought each other hard back and forth with the match on the line and Munoz showed her grit as she came away with the 7-6 (6) victory to give the Beach a 4-3 win.
Long Beach State will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m., when the Beach host Hawaii in Big West Conference action at Rhodes Tennis Center.
