Long Beach State cut a 19-point lead to just one in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get over the top.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Down 19 points late in the third quarter, Long Beach State battled back to cut the lead to one at 61-60 in the final five minutes, but Northern Iowa held on for a 71-64 win in the first day of the Beach Classic.
Sophomore Shanaijah Davison led Long Beach State (0-5) with 20 points on the night, while Naomi Hunt also finished in double-figures. Freshman Lauren Green also set career highs in scoring and rebounding in the loss with 11 points and seven rebounds. In the process, Green became the seventh different player this season for the Beach to score in double-figures.
In a defensive start to the game, Northern Iowa (3-2) held on to a small lead after the first quarter of 13-7, and would increase that edge just slightly over the second ten minutes. Long Beach State would cut the lead to three at 23-20, but the Panthers scored five straight to close the half to lead by eight at the break.
In the third, Northern Iowa got hot. After shooting just 3-for-20 from three in the first half, the Panthers shot 4-for-7 in the third quarter, taking their ten-point lead and pushing it to 19 at 48-29.
The Beach would bounce back though, getting a three from Hunt in the closing seconds of the quarter and making a big push in the fourth.
Davison scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth, as the Beach forced UNI into nine turnovers in just that quarter and put the pressure on. A three from Sydney Bordonaro cut the lead to five at 59-54, and then the Beach pulled their closest at 61-60 after a steal from Bordonaro and a hit from Hunt.
UNI answered with a three from Mikaela Morgan however, and a three-point play by Megan Maahs helped the Panthers hold off Long Beach State's late challenge.
In the opening game on Friday, Boise State beat Idaho 91-85. The Broncos will face Northern Iowa in the first game of the day Saturday, tipping off at 4 p.m., with the Beach hosting Idaho in the final game of the Beach Classic immediately following.
