Long Beach State Celebrates Homecoming With 78-57 Win Over Menlo

11/10/2018 8:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball

The Beach picked up its first win of the season in its home opener, making it eight consecutive Homecoming victories. LBSU also retired Glenn McDonald’s number 20 during a special halftime ceremony.

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- For the eighth consecutive season, Long Beach State (1-1) celebrated Homecoming with a victory, this time knocking off Menlo College, 78-57, in front of 3,888 fans at Walter Pyramid. Four players scored in double-figures for Long Beach, and 13 players played 10 or more minutes in Saturday's victory.

There was plenty of pomp and circumstance surrounding the game, as well, as the 2018 National Champion Long Beach State men's volleyball team received their rings prior to the game, and Long Beach State Hall of Famer Glenn McDonald had his No. 20 retired during a special halftime ceremony. McDonald joins Ed Ratleff, Lucious Harris and Bryon Russell as former men's basketball players to have their numbers retired at the Beach.

Coming off a career-high 31 points at UCLA, Deishuan Booker again led the Beach in scoring with 19 on Saturday, including 11 at the charity stripe where he was 11-for-12 on the evening. Edon Maxhuni made all five of his free throws and added a pair of triples to score 15. Senior Temidayo Yussuf flirted with a double-double, posting 11 points and eight rebounds with three steals as well. Jordan Griffin also reached double-figures with 12 points.

Long Beach State out-rebounded Menlo 50-34, and had 19 second-chance points compared to just eight for the Oaks. The Beach also had six blocked shots as a team, with half of them coming from Mason Riggins, who also added seven boards.

The offense started slowly for the Beach, leading to just a 28-25 lead at halftime, but things picked up in the second 20 minutes. LBSU scored 50 points after halftime and were able to hold Menlo under 60 points on the night. Griffin and Maxhuni each had 12 points in the second half as the Beach shot 50 percent from the floor.

LBSU put things out of reach with a 16-2 run, extending a 36-32 lead up to a 52-34 advantage with just under 11 minutes to play. The lead grew to as many as 25 (67-42) and never got below 20 over the final six minutes as the Beach cruised to victory.

Next up is another Pac-12 opponent as the Beach heads out for a long road trip. LBSU will take on Arizona State on Monday at 6 p.m. in Tempe, with TV coverage provided by Pac-12 Network
