The Beach played its third game in four days to open the season and suffered a 90-58 setback on the road at Arizona State on Monday.
TEMPE, Ariz. -- A sluggish first half left Long Beach State (1-2) in a hole on Monday night at Arizona State (3-0) and the host Sun Devils turned up the heat in a 90-58 win at Wells Fargo Arena. Junior Jordan Griffin led the Beach with nine points thanks to three second-half 3-pointers.
The Beach forced 18 turnovers and collected 11 steals on the night, led by four from Ron Freeman and three from Bryan Alberts. Deishuan Booker had an off night offensively, but finished with eight points, five assists and two steals. Mason Riggins chipped in six points and a team-leading six rebounds.
After scoring just 16 points in the first half, during which the Beach went 2/15 from long range, the team turned things around offensively with 42 points after the break. Five different players hit three's in the second half, led by Griffin's three, as the team was 7/16 from beyond the arc after halftime.
Long Beach State made its biggest run in the early stages of the second half, going on a 14-2 scoring stretch that cut ASU's lead to 15 at 49-34 with 12:19 to play. LBSU couldn't manage to get any closer, however, as the Sun Devils were 15/18 from the free-throw line in the second half.
LBSU remains on the road for another tough test later in the week. The Beach will be at No. 17 Mississippi State on Friday at 6 p.m. PT, with television coverage provided by SEC Network.
