LONG BEACH STATE HOSTS LOYOLA MARYMOUNT ON FRIDAY
The Long Beach State women's basketball team welcomes Loyola Marymount to the Walter Pyramid on Friday, November 17 for a 7 p.m. contest. The game marks the Beach's last home match for LBSU until Dec. 17, as the team begins a six-game road swing following the LMU game.
QUICK HITS
• After dropping contests to Pepperdine and Montana State last week, Long Beach State is looking for its first win of the 2017-18 season.
• This is the first time since the 2013-14 season that the Beach has opened the season with two straight losses. In 2013, LBSU dropped its season opener to then-No. 9 Cal, before falling to Nevada.
• Freshman center Emma Merriweather got off to a hot start notching a double-double in her collegiate debut with 13 rebounds and 11 points against Pepperdine.
• Freshman guard Shanaijah Davison came off the bench and poured in a 20-point performance against Montana State two days after tallying 10 points against Pepperdine. In her first two games of the season, she is averaging 15 points per game.
• Freshman guard Ma'Qhi Berry made her Beach debut with a team-high 16-point effort against Pepperdine. She is averaging 10.5 points per game thus far.
• Picking up where they left off a year ago, the Beach is leading the Big West in steals (25) after the opening weekend. Long Beach State has led the Big West in steals in each of the last four seasons.
• In addition to leading the league in steals, Long Beach State also leads the Big West in free throw percentage (75.0), offensive rebounds per game (17.0) and steals per game (12.5).
PROMOS VERSUS LMU
Long Beach State will be giving away posters of the women's basketball team on Friday, November 17 in the game against Loyola Marymount. Following the conclusion of the game, there will be an autograph session and fans will have the opportunity to meet the 2017-18 team.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Loyola Marymount opened the season with a 2-0 record after defeating UC Riverside (67-59) and Saint Louis (62-60) on the road.
Gabby Green and Andee Velasco are the Lions' leading scorers as Green is averaging 18.5 points per game, while Velasco averages 16.0. Green is also the team's second leading rebounder with 7.5, as she comes in behind Bree Alford who posts 13.0 boards per game.Green has also swiped a team-best eight steals on the year.
SERIES VS. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount will meet for the 18th time in program history and LMU leads the all-time series 12-5. The Beach have won the last two meetings, most recently defeating the Lions 81-78 in overtime last season. However, when playing at the Walter Pyramid, Loyola Marymount holds a slight edge with a 5-3 record.
ON THIS DAY IN BEACH BASKETBALL HISTORY
Long Beach State women's basketball owns a 2-3 record when playing on November 17th. The last time the Beach played on that date was in 2013 when they defeated San Francisco, 85-82 in double overtime.
COMING UP
Long Beach State will take on USC at the Galen Center on Monday, November 20 at 7 p.m. The contest against the Trojans kicks off a six-game road swing for the Beach in which they travel to San Diego, Arizona and Montana. Following the USC game, LBSU will take on San Diego on Wednesday, November 22 at 6 p.m. After the Thanksgiving holiday, the Beach will go up against Arizona in Tucson on Tuesday, November 28 at 6 p.m. Long Beach State then opens the month of December at the Lady Griz Classic in Missoula, Mont., where it will play Oral Roberts (Dec. 1 at 5 p.m.) and host Montana (Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.). To conclude their road trip, the Beach will take on Grand Canyon in Phoenix on December 7 at 7 p.m.
