LONG BEACH STATE TRAVELS TO UC DAVIS, HOSTS CAL POLY
Long Beach State continues Big West Conference action as the Beach travel to UC Davis for a Thursday evening contest before returning to the Walter Pyramid for a Saturday game against Cal Poly. The 49ers adn the Aggies will face off at 7 p.m. on Jan. 12 inside The Pavilion. On Jan. 14, the Beach and the Mustangs will go head-to-head at 4 p.m. All games can be heard on KBeach.com and streamed on Big West TV.
QUICK HITS
• With the 68-57 victory over Hawaii, Long Beach State is now 20-12 in Big West Conference openers, and 1-1 against the Rainbow Wahine in league openers.
• Long Beach State snapped a seven-game losing streak to Hawaii when the Beach earned a 68-57 win over the Rainbow Wahine to opne conference play last week.
• Long Beach State defeated No. 22 South Florida, 73-68, on Monday, Dec. 19 to open the Play4Kay Shootout marking the 49ers' first win over a ranked opponent since Dec. 13, 2014 when they defeated then-No. 18 Cal, 58-56, in overtime.
• Senior Madison Montgomery has been on fire offensively as of late as she leads the team averaging 11.4 points per game. Most recently, she poured in a career-high 23-point effort against Hawaii to lead the Beach to a conference open win.
• REBOUND WATCH: Senior Raven Benton is just two rebounds away from 500 career boards and becoming just the 13th player in LBSU women's basketball program history to enter the 1,000 point-500 rebound club.
• The Beach has led the Big West in steals in each of the last three seasons and is currently sitting atop the league with 166 which ranks them 32nd in the nation.
• In addition to leading the league in steals, LBSU also leads the Big West in Turnover Margin (+6.8), Offensive Rebounds (15.2) and Three-Point Field Goals Made (135).
• Long Beach State was tabbed as the favorite to claim the 2016-17 Big West title in both the coaches preseason poll and the media poll.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
UC Davis owns an 11-4 overall record as is 2-0 in Big West Conference action as the Aggies sit atop the league standings. Davis is 6-1 when playing at The Pavilion this season and has won six of its last eight contests.
As a team, the Aggies are shooting 45.6 percent and averaging 73.1 points per game. UC Davis' defense has surrendered 64.6 points per game, while allowing the opposition to shoot 36.1 percent from the field.
UC Davis has three double-figure scorers in Morgan Bertsch (17.5 points per game), Dani Nafekh (11.9 ppg) and Rachel Nagle (10.6 ppg). Bertsch leads the league with 263 points and a 17.5 ppg average, she also adds 84 rebounds (5.6 boards per game) to come in second on the team behind Pele Gianotti (5.7 rebounds per game). Bertsch is also the team leader in blocks with 29, and she adds 26 assists and 17 steals.
SERIES VS. UC DAVIS
Long Beach State and UC Davis will meet for the 30th time in program history and the Beach lead the all-time series 16-13. LBSU has won the last two meetings as Davis is looking for its first win over the 49ers since March 11, 2015 when they ended Long Beach State's season at the Big West Conference Tournament. Last season, the Beach swept the Aggies as they won both meetings in Davis and Long Beach.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Cal Poly comes into the Pyramid with a 6-8 overall record and a 2-0 Big West Conference ledger after having snapped a four-game losing streak and kicked off league action with wins over UC Santa Barbara (78-67) and CSUN (79-68).
The Mustangs are shooting 39.3 percent from the field and 22.9 from long distance and averaging 67.1 points per game, while allowing 68.2 points per game to their opponents who are shooting 38.8 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from three-point range.
Twin sisters Dynn Leaupepe and Lynn Leaupepe are the team's leading scorers as they average 14.9 and 14.4 points per game, respectively. Rounding out the Mustangs' double-figure scorers is Hannah Gilbert who averages 13.9 points per contest. Lynn Leaupepe is Cal Poly's leader at the glass with 114 boards (8.1 rebounds per game). She also adds 28 assists and 24 steals. Dynn Leaupepe leads the Mustangs with 30 steals and 41 assists, while contributing 55 rebounds and nine assists.
SERIES VS. CAL POLY
Long Beach State and Cal Poly will go up against each other for the 64th time in program history and the 49er hold the all-time series lead 44-19. The Beach has been victorious in the last three outings as the Mustangs are in search of their first win over LBSU since Feb. 14 2015. When playing Cal Poly in Long Beach, the 49ers own a 22-7 series advantage.
