LONG BEACH - Long Beach State head women's basketball coach Jody Wynn announced the team's 2016-17 schedule on Tuesday.
Wynn, who enters her eighth year at the helm of the program, has once again put together a tough non-conference slate that could feature up to six opponents that advanced to the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
"This preseason schedule is extremely competitive and will definitely prepare our team for conference play," Wynn said. "There is a great balance of challenging opponents both at the Pyramid and on the road. We are also playing in two tournaments filled with NCAA Tournament teams that will help our program get ready for the Big West Tournament and postseason action."
The Beach will start the campaign on the road as it heads to Nevada (Nov. 11) and Pepperdine (Nov. 13) for its season-opening weekend.
LBSU then returns to the friendly confines of the Walter Pyramid for its home opener against Houston on Friday, Nov. 18. The 49ers will have a quick turnaround as they travel north to face defending West Coast Conference Tournament champion San Francisco on Sunday, Nov. 20.
The team then makes their way back to Southern California where they will host Duke (Nov. 25), prior to making the short trip to USC (Nov. 27). Long Beach State stays on the road the following weekend, traveling to Tempe, Ariz., for the ASU Classic, Dec. 3-4. The Beach is set to face 2016 NCAA Tournament participant Florida in the first game and either Arizona State (NCAA Second Round) or Boston University on the second day.
LBSU comes back to Long Beach to host Pacific (Dec. 7) and Biola University (Dec. 16), with a road game at Loyola Marymount (Dec. 10) sandwiched in between the two home contests. The 49ers are then off to Las Vegas for the inaugural Play4Kay Shootout, Dec. 19-21. The eight-team showcase features four teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year (Oregon State -- Final Four, Oklahoma State, New Mexico State and South Florida), and three teams that played in the WNIT (Long Beach State, Santa Clara and Quinnipiac).
The Beach will then have a 10-day layoff before its final non-conference game against Columbia on Saturday, Dec. 31.
Long Beach State kicks off its Big West slate at home against defending conference tournament champion Hawai'i on Thursday, Jan. 5.
LBSU will also host the first round and quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament at the Walter Pyramid, March 7-8.
