Long Beach State Men Win Ninth-Straight Big West Challenge

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Long Beach State men's track and field team continued its dominance at the Big West Challenge as it claimed the team title Friday evening at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Track Complex.
For the ninth-straight year, LBSU topped the four-team Big West field. The Beach finished with 165.5 points to edge runner-up UC Santa Barbara (161). UC Irvine came in third (151.5) and Cal State Fullerton was fourth (133).
The 49er women, winners of the last two Big West Challenge meets, came up just short as they were nine points behind team champion UC Santa Barbara. Long Beach State totaled 180.5 points to easily place ahead of Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine, which tied for third (147).
The LBSU men started the day off by taking the top two spots in the hammer, keeping their streak alive as they have had a 1-2 finish in every meet this season. Senior Kody Robison notched his fifth individual victory with a toss of 202-08. He has thrown for over 200 feet in every competition. Junior Robert Marlow also reached the 200-foot mark in his fourth-straight outing as he wasn't far behind Robison at 202-04.
Redshirt freshman Josh Carr placed second overall in the discus (154-09).
The Beach went 1-2-3 in the long jump with senior Willie Alexander leading the way at 24-09.25. It was Alexander's third-straight long jump victory this season. Redshirt freshman Kemonie Briggs was the runner-up with a lifetime-best 24-00.75, while sophomore Herman Day was third (22-00.25).
Alexander made it two-for-two in the jumps as he also finished ahead of the pack in the triple jump with a season-best 47-03.5.
Senior Michael Montgomery was the last man standing in the pole vault, clearing 16-06.75 for the victory. Junior Xander Cooper added a season-best 16-02.75 to take second. Juniors Paul Thenard and Bo Haddock, and sophomore Dustin Wert, all tied for third at 15-09.
Day was the top performer in the high jump where he reached a personal-record 6-06.75. Junior Diego Felix was the runner-up at 6-02.75.
On the track, junior Daniel York-Mouton clocked in at a season-best 47.05 seconds to claim top honors in the 400m, while senior Dylan McCloskey scored with a fourth-place finish (48.8).
Alexander, who was the runner-up in the 100m (10.9), also joined forces with Briggs, freshman John Kendrick and senior Michael Perez-Rogers to win the 4x100 relay in a season-best 40.98 seconds.
Senior Ryan Colebrook had a pair of top-three finishes in the hurdles as he was second in the 400H with a personal-record 52.16 seconds, and third in the 110H (14.75).
Junior Sam Bautista registered a lifetime-best 3:59.48 in the 1500m, and sophomore Kevin Ramirez had a season-best 8:35.26 for a runner-up showing in the 3000m.
Junior Riley Cooks led the women with individual victories in the 200m (24.01) and the 100m hurdles (13.93). Her time in the 200m was a personal best and also ranks sixth in program history. Sophomore Elijah McDonald was third in the 100H at 14.23 seconds.
Freshman Courtne' Davis claimed runner-up honors in a tight 100m race (11.79), as she was just .01 seconds behind the leader. Sophomore Madison Carney added a personal-record 12.04, which was good for fourth place. Davis was also third in the 200m (24.35).
Cooks, Davis, sophomore Ashleigh Chambers and redshirt freshman Whitney Knox combined to run the sixth-fastest 4x100 relay in school history as they won the event with a time of 45.84 seconds.
Senior Natalie O'Dwyer registered a personal-best 58.66 to place fifth in the 400m.
Junior Kathleen Dunne was third in her first steeplechase of the year, crossing the finish line in a lifetime-best 11:00.9. That moved her up three spots to No. 4 on the LBSU all-time charts. Sophomore Ashley Carrera also notched a personal-best 10:25.84 in the 3000m.
Sophomore Brittany Anselmo scored in the 800m as she took sixth in a season-best 2:18.68, while classmate Chandler Johnson was fourth in the 1500m with a personal-record 4:42.88.
In the field events, the Beach claimed the top three spots in the shot put with senior Fatima Vergara picking up the victory at 44-08.25. Senior Brianna Viltz was second (41-10.5), while freshman Nikaela Harris was third (41-09.25).
Vergara and Viltz added runner-up showings in the hammer (190-02) and discus (146-01), respectively. Senior Marina Shelton was also third in the hammer throw at 185-06.
Senior Tiffany Forbito placed second in the javelin (140-05), while Cooks took fifth (132-04). Junior Shelby Crider contributed a season-best 128-10 for a sixth-place finish.
Senior Aundrea Yancy needed just one attempt to win the triple jump with a season-best 37-06.5. Freshmen Allison Foster (18-01) and Melanee Williams (17-10.75) were second and third, respectively, in the long jump. Foster's mark was a season best.
Sophomore Kennedy Krueger led six 49ers in the pole vault with a runner-up performance (11-09.75). Classmates Jessica Henslee and Lauren Bartsch also tied for third at 11-03.75.
Long Beach State is back in action next week as it hosts the Pacific Coast Invitational on Thursday, April 14, and the annual Beach Invitational on Friday (April 15) and Saturday (April 16). The two meets will be held at the newly renovated Jack Rose Track, marking the first time in 11 years LBSU will host a meet on campus.
