LONG BEACH - A handful of meet and stadium records went down on Friday as Long Beach State hosted the first day of the Beach Invitational at the newly renovated Jack Rose Track. This is the first time since 2005 that LBSU has hosted the Beach Invite on campus.
The Men's Javelin Gold Invitational was the first of four cash prize events to be contested this weekend. Riley Dolezal, the 2013 U.S. national champion, won the event with a meet and Jack Rose Track record 258-09. The rest of the top four also surpassed the old meet record with Julio Oliveira in second (252-08), Tim Vanliew in third (249-08) and Cyrus Hostetler in fourth (248-01).
Two-time Olympian Ashley Campbell shattered the Beach Invitational and Jack Rose Track record in the women's hammer throw, taking top honors in the event at 241-01. Also beating the old stadium record were Lauren Stuart (219-04), Brooke Pleger (215-07) and Laura Igaune (210-08).
Two of the women's 3000m steeplechase runners from Eastern Washington beat an old meet and stadium record with Katie Mahoney (10:24.48) winning the event and Paula Gil-Echevarria (10:25.82) claiming runner-up honors.
In addition, Rocio Garcia (Corre A.C.) started the day off with a Beach Invitational meet record in the 10K as she finished ahead of the pack in 36:32.77.
For Long Beach State, senior Kody Robison was the top collegiate finisher (fourth overall) in the men's hammer with a distance of 211-10. That was his second-best mark of the year and he has now thrown for over 200 feet in all seven of his competitions. Junior Robert Marlow was also ninth at 199-02, while classmate James Hubbard was 10th (198-03).
In the women's hammer throw, senior Fatima Vergara was 11th overall, and fifth among collegiate athletes, at 193-05, just six inches off her lifetime best. Senior Marina Shelton wasn't far behind in 12th place (191-03).
Senior Tiffany Forbito missed out on advancing to the finals in the women's javelin by two spots as she came in 11th with a toss of 146-01.
Sophomore Ashley Carrera established a personal-record 37:25.47 to finish fifth in the women's 10000m. Junior Pauline Mandel also came in eighth at 39:19.49. It was the first 10K for both Carrera and Mandel this season.
Senior Tim Bergstrom had a strong showing in the men's 10000m as he placed ninth overall with a time of 31:58.07.
Junior Kathleen Dunne crossed the finish line in 17:53.49 to take 16th out of 34 in the women's 5K.
