LBSU, Daniel Chian Wins Anteater Invitational

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. - The Long Beach State men's golf team overcame a five-shot deficit heading into Tuesday's final round of the 35th Anteater Invitational at El Niguel Country Club to capture the team title, while senior Daniel Chian won individual medalist honors.
This was the second consecutive team title for LBSU this year as the 49ers won the Bob Sitton Invitational in Dallas, Texas back on Mar. 17.
LBSU posted the lowest score of the day with a 296 to move past tournament host UC Irvine for the top spot as the Anteaters shot a 308. The 49ers completed the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 27-over-par 891, winning the tournament by seven shots over the 'Eaters (+34) in second and 12 strokes over third-place CSUN (+39).
Chian captured his second individual medalist title this year and third overall with a one-over 217, edging fellow classmate Kevin Lee and Christopher Crawford of Drexel by two shots.
Starting from the first hole, Chian posted four birdies in his first five holes of the round with just one bogey to finish the front-nine at three-under. The Covina, Calif. native would then go par, birdie, bogey on his first three holes on the back-nine to finish the round with six consecutive pars.
Lee completed the tournament at three-over 219 after going bogey-free on his first 12 holes of the round that included two birdies. On his last six holes, Lee collected two bogeys, one double-bogey and three pars.
Redshirt freshman Joe Fryer shot a 77 to tie for 11th at 10-over, while senior Michael Chen carded a 76 to place 24th at 15-over and junior Nick Cantlay recorded an 80 to tie for 38th at 21-over.
Junior Jonny Hogan and freshman Nick Choi, playing as individuals for the 49ers, tied for 25th and 58th respectively. Hogan posted his best round of the tournament with a 73 to finish at 16-over, while Choi carded a low round 80 to finish at 30-over.
The 49ers return to action on Apr. 11, traveling up the coast to Santa Barbara for the UCSB Intercollegiate at Sandpiper Golf Club.
