Long Beach, Calif. - Beach Tennis opened Big West play with a convincing 6-1 win over CSUN (1-3, 0-1 Big West) on Friday afternoon. It's the second straight victory by that scoreline for the 49ers as they improve to 2-0 on the campaign.
"In extremely windy and difficult conditions, we played smart tennis to come up with a strong conference win," said LBSU head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello.
The win marks the 21st straight in Big West regular season action for Long Beach State, and it is the program's 20th straight win over CSUN.
The Beach secured the doubles point with a pair of 6-3 wins from the top two pairs. The team of Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard is now 2-0 this season in doubles play while top pair Hayley Thompson and Laura Eales picked up their first win of the campaign.
Thompson scored the quickest win of the afternoon, taking down Ki Kim at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1. She was one of four 49ers to win in straight sets, joined by Ebba Unden, Gerard and Eales. Gerard improved to 2-0 on the season with, coincidentally, her second straight 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Razakasoa was pushed to three sets once again, but this time came out on the right side of the third set tiebreak, winning 7-5, 1-6, 10-5 over top Matadors player Mickey Hsu.
Long Beach State returns to action next Saturday at 11 a.m. when Loyola Marymount visits Rhodes Tennis Center.
