HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Long Beach State women's basketball team saw its five-game win streak come to an end as it never really found its rhythm on the offensive end in a 60-42 loss to Hawai'i Thursday evening at Stan Sheriff Center.
The Beach (17-6, 6-3 Big West) scored a season-low 42 points on 25.4 percent (15-59) shooting. It was also 3-for-17 from beyond the arc and was outrebounded, 53-30. On the bright side, LBSU did have 11 steals and forced the Rainbow Wahine into 21 turnovers, while committing only 13 miscues of its own.
Junior Madison Montgomery registered a team-high nine points, while classmate Anna Kim had eight. Sophomore Gigi Hascheff added seven points. Junior Raven Benton pulled down a team-best five rebounds, but went an uncharacteristic 0-for-8 from the field in 12 minutes played. Sophomore Cecily Wilson contributed a game-high four steals.
Junior Jewelyn Sawyer got Long Beach State on the board first with a jumper at the 9:04 mark. Just over three minutes later, Hawai'i tied it up with its first bucket of the game. The Rainbow Wahine then pulled ahead 6-2, before Hascheff made a pair of free throws to end a seven-minute scoring drought for the Beach. UH eventually took a 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The 49ers' continued to struggle on offense in the second period as UH scored the first 10 points to increase its lead to 20-8 with 4:45 to play. Kim then got LBSU's first basket of the frame at the 3:47 mark, but Hawai'i went on to outscore the Beach, 18-4, to take a 28-12 advantage at the break.
Long Beach State shot just 16.1 percent from the field and was outrebounded, 30-15, in the first half.
LBSU fell behind by as many 21 early in the third quarter, but chipped away slowly, cutting its deficit to 15 (37-22) at the 2:33 mark following four-straight free throws from Hascheff. Hawai'i responded with a 4-0 spurt, but the 49ers scored the final five points to trail 40-27.
Long Beach State started the fourth quarter with steal and layup from freshman Chanterria Jackson to make it an 11-point game at 40-29, but UH went back on top by 15 with 8:08 remaining. Montgomery then drained a three, before Hawai'i answered with a triple on the other end. LBSU made one final push with a pair of free throws from Wilson and a Chantel Dooley layup making it 47-36. That was the closest the 49ers would get, however, as the `Bows closed out the game on a 13-6 run for the 60-42 win.
Hawai'i (15-9, 8-3 Big West) was 37.9 percent from the floor and 31.6 percent from 3-point range. Megan Huff led the Rainbow Wahine with 18 points, 16 rebounds and four assists.
Long Beach State has a quick turnaround as it returns home to host UC Santa Barbara at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13.
