LONG BEACH STATE HOSTS PACIFIC, TRAVELS TO LMU
The Long Beach State women's basketball team returns to the Walter Pyramid to host Pacific in a mid-week, non-conference contest on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. Directly following, the LBSU men's team takes the court to host Pepperdine at 7:30 p.m. The Beach women's squad will then travel to Loyola Marymount for a Saturday, Dec. 10 matinee in at the Gersten Pavilion at 2 p.m.
QUICK HITS
• With a 61-48 victory over Boston University at the ASU Classic, Long Beach State snapped a four-game losing skid.
• Senior Jewelyn Sawyer was named to the All-Tournament Team at the ASU Classic after totaling 23 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists, five steals and two blocks agaisnt No. 19 Florida and Boston University.
• Senior Raven Benton moved into 14th place on the 1,000 point scorers list after bringing her career total to 1,166 points.
• Senior Anna Kim has swiped a team-leading 18 steals on the year to average 3.0 steals per game. Her steals per contest average leads the Big West and is also good for 28th in the nation.
• The Beach has led the Big West in steals in each of the last three seasons and is currently sitting atop the league with 95 for an average of 11.9 steals per game.
• LBSU's 95 steals rank the Beach 18th in NCAA, while its 11.9 steals per game are good for 26th in the nation.
• The 49ers lead the Big West in Turnover Margin with a 6.75 average which is good for 23rd in the nation.
• The Beach has been solid on offensive rebounding as they lead the conference with 16.6 offensive boards per game.
• As a team, LBSU has made 71 three-point field goals which leads the league and ranks 15th in the NCAA. The 49ers are averaging 8.9 made three-pointers per game which is good for 19th in the nation.
• This season the Beach has forced 183 turnovers to average 22.9 per game which ranks 15th in the nation and leads the Big West Conference.
• With a 65-55 victory over Houston in the home opener the Beach improved its winning streak in home openers to six.
• After opening the season with a back-to-back double-doubles, senior Jewelyn Sawyer was named Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week (Nov. 14).
• Over the last two years, Long Beach State has compiled an impressive 50-23 record for a winning percentage of .685.
• Long Beach State was tabbed as the favorite to claim the 2016-17 Big West title in both the coaches preseason poll and the media poll.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Pacific comes into the Walter Pyramid with a 3-4 record after defeating Cal State Bakersfield, 91-61, on Sunday to snap a three game losing streak.
The Tigers are averaging 83.4 points per game, while allowing 77.9 and shooting 44.6 percent from the field, while their opponents are shooting a similar 44.5 percent. Pacific trails in rebounding (39.0 to 36.4), but holds the edge in assists (123 to 120) and steals (65 to 51).
The Tigers have three double-figure scorers on their roster led by GeAnna Luaulu-Summers (16.3). Behind Luaulu-Summers is Chelsea Lidy, who averages 14.6 points per game, and Desire Finnie, with 11.1 points per contest. Luaulu-Summers also leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game, and is the tied for the team lead in assists (30) and steals (15).
SERIES VS. PACIFIC
Long Beach State and Pacific will meet for the 63rd time in program history and the Beach leads the all-time series 39-24. When playing in Long Beach, Calif., the 49ers lead the series 23-8. A year ago, LBSU defeated Pacific, 68-60, in Stockton, Calif. The Beach have won the last two meetings as the Tigers are looking for their first victory over the 49ers since 2013 when they edged Long Beach State, 59-53 at the Pyramid.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Loyola Marymount owns a 5-4 record and has won five of its last six games. The Lions have taken on three other Big West schools this year and are 3-0 against the league as they defeated UC Irvine, 58-39, UC Santa Barbara, 57-55, and Cal State Fullerton, 77-62.
As a team, the Lions are averaging 62.8 points per game, while shooting 38.1 percent from the field. Their opponents, meanwhile, are shooting 35.9 percent and averaing 66.1 points per game.
Offensively, LMU has three double-figure scorers in Jackie Johnson (14.7 points per game), Cheyanne Wallace (13.9 ppg) and Leslie Lopez-Wood (10.0 ppg). Johnson is averaging a double-double with 11.4 rebounds per game and she has also contributed a team-leading 21 steals and 25 blocks.
SERIES VS. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount will meet for the 17th time in program history. LMU leads the all-time series 12-4. In their last meeting, in 2013, LBSU earned a 10-point win (76-66) over the Lions at the Walter Pyramid. However, prior to that, LMU had won the previous 12 showings.
