LONG BEACH STATE SET TO TAKE PART IN PLAY4KAY SHOOTOUT
The Long Beach State women's basketball team heads to Las Vegas, Nev., to take part in the Play4Kay Shootout at the T-Mobile Arena. The tournament will run from Monday, Dec. 19 - Wednesday, Dec. 22. The Beach kicks off the tournament against No. 22 USF on Dec. 19 at 12:30 p.m. For complete tournament information, visit Play4KayHoops.com.
QUICK HITS
• This year has been a season of streaks for the Beach as they are currently riding a four-game winning streak, after snapping a four-game losing streak, which came on the heels of a season-opening three-game winning streak.
• Senior Madison Montgomery was named Big West Conference Player of the Week (Dec. 12) after tying her career-high with 22 points at LMU and averaging 17.5 points per game over the weekend.
• Senior Jewelyn Sawyer was named to the All-Tournament Team at the ASU Classic after totaling 23 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists, five steals and two blocks against No. 19 Florida and Boston University.
• Senior Raven Benton moved into 14th place on the 1,000 point scorers list after bringing her career total to 1,168 points.
• The Beach has led the Big West in steals in each of the last three seasons and is currently sitting atop the league with 127 which ranks them 21st in the nation. The 49ers' average of 11.5 steals per game is good for 34th in the NCAA.
• In addition to leading the league in steals, LBSU also leads the Big West in Turnover Margin (+6.9), Offensive Rebounds (16.0) and Three-Point Field Goals Made (96).
• Over the last two years, Long Beach State has compiled an impressive 52-23 record for a winning percentage of .693.
• Long Beach State was tabbed as the favorite to claim the 2016-17 Big West title in both the coaches preseason poll and the media poll.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
USF is off to its best start in program history as the Bulls are 8-0 on the year. The Bulls are coming off of a 129-80 victory over Saint Francis last Wednesday as they have improved to 4-0 at home, 2-0 on the road and 2-0 in neutral site contests.
As a team, the Bulls are shooting 47.7 percent from the field and averaging 84.8 points per game, while holding their opponents to 56.6 points per game on 33.3 percent shooting. USF leads its counterparts in virtually every statistical category, with the exception of turnovers.
Sophomore Kitija Laksa currently leads the nation with 4.25 three-point field goals per game as she helps the Bulls to an average of 10.3 treys per contest. Laksa has tallied 166 points on the year to average 20.8 points per game to lead the team, while adding 4.4 rebounds per game, 11 assists, seven steals and two blocks. In addition to Laksa, the Bulls have two other double-figure scorers in Ariadna Pujol (18.0 ppg) and Maria Jespersen (13.3 ppg). Jespersen leads the squad in rebounding with 59 boards to average 7.4 rebounds per game. She also has contributed 15 assists, one block and is tied for the team lead with eight steals.
SERIES VS. USF
Long Beach State and USF will meet for the first time in program history and the Beach is looking to snap the Bulls' eight-game winning streak and hand them their first loss of the season. The Bulls, meanwhile, are looking on snapping the 49ers' four-game winning streak as LBSU has not lost a game since Dec. 3.
