LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State men's volleyball has released its upcoming schedule for the 2017 season. The fourth-ranked 49ers have a competitive slate on tap as they host 15 home matches, including the LBSU Asics Tournament, and 13 road matches against some of the top teams in the nation.
The Beach is coming off of an incredible run in 2016 in which they earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships where they advanced to the Final Four. LBSU's semifinal appearance was the team's eighth appearance in the Final Four and its first since 2008. With 19 returning letterwinners and five returning starters, the 2017 squad is ready to take on a tough schedule featuring 12 of 15 nationally-ranked teams as the 49ers look to make a return trip to the NCAA Championships.
"Our schedule has a great balance of competitive conference and non-conference matches," Long Beach State head coach Alan Knipe said. "We play some really good matches on the road in some tough environments and we'll be hosting our annual tournament which will bring in some of the nation's best teams.
"As always, the goal of our schedule is to make sure we schedule across the country and get a good balance of conference and non-conference teams to enhance our overall RPI."
Long Beach State kicks off the 2017 season with a pair of matches against Manitoba at the Walter Pyramid on Jan. 4 and 5. The following day, the Beach hits the road to take part in the UC Santa Barbara Tournament. The tourney begins a road trip that pits the 49ers up against MPSF foes USC (Jan. 11) and Cal Baptist (Jan. 13), before they return home to host No. 7 Hawaii on Jan. 18 and 20.
The Beach then head to Columbus, Ohio to take on St. Francis (Jan. 27) and reigning national champion Ohio State (Jan. 28) which comes in at No. 1 in the AVCA Preseason Poll.
LBSU returns to Walter Pyramid to host No. 5 Pepperdine (Feb. 2) and No. 9 Stanford (Feb. 4), before hitting the road once again to take on No. 8 UC Irvine (Feb. 10), UC San Diego (Feb. 11), No. 12 UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 15), and No. 2 UCLA (Feb. 18).
February 22 marks the Beach's return to Long Beach, Calif., as they host half a dozen home matches including the Asics Tournament. In that cluster of matches, LBSU welcomes Cal Baptist (Feb. 22), USC (Feb. 24), No. 8 UC Irvine (March 1), and UC San Diego (March 3) to the Pyramid before going head-to-head with No. 10 George Mason (March 10) and No. 11 Loyola Chicago (March 11) at the tourney.
Following their string of home matches, the 49ers head to Northridge, Calif., to take on No. 14 CSUN on March 17, before coming back to Long Beach and hosting Sacred Heart on March 18 in a non-conference contest. The Beach resume MPSF action at No. 3 BYU in Provo, Utah on March 24 and 25, before closing out the regular season at home against Concordia (March 31) and No. 14 CSUN (April 8).
The MPSF Tournament will begin on April 15 with the First Round matches, followed by the Semifinals on April 20, and the Finals on April 22.
