The Long Beach State women's basketball team travels to Tempe, Ariz., to take part in the ASU Classic hosted by Arizona State. The Beach kick off the weekend tournament against No. 19/23 Florida on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1:30 p.m. Depending on the outcome, the 49ers will take on either No. RV/24 Arizona State or Boston University on Sunday, Dec. 4 at a time yet to be determined.
QUICK HITS
• Senior Raven Benton moved into 14th place on the 1,000 point scorers list after bringing her career total to 1,166 points.
• Senior Anna Kim has swiped a team-leading 18 steals on the year to average 3.0 steals per game. Her steals per contest average leads the Big West and is also good for 39th in the nation.
• Junior Gigi Hascheff had a career game at USC as she poured in a career-best 21 points while shooting 63.6 percent (7-for-11) from the field and 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from three-point range.
• The Beach has led the Big West in steals in each of the last three seasons and is currently sitting atop the league with 73 for an average of 12.2 steals per game.
• LBSU's 73 steals rank the Beach 27th in NCAA.
• The 49ers lead the Big West in Turnover Margin with a 7.33 average which is good for 23rd in the nation.
• The Beach has been solid on offensive rebounding as they lead the conference with 17.0 offensive boards per game.
• As a team, LBSU has made 52 three-point field goals which leads the league and ranks 24th in the NCAA.
• With a 65-55 victory over Houston in the home opener the Beach improved its winning streak in home openers to six.
• After opening the season with a back-to-back double-doubles, senior Jewelyn Sawyer was named Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week (Nov. 14).
• Over the last two years, Long Beach State has compiled an impressive 49-22 record for a winning percentage of .690.
• Long Beach State was tabbed as the favorite to claim the 2016-17 Big West title in both the coaches preseason poll and the media poll.
SCOUTING THE GATORS
The 19th-ranked Florida Gators come into the ASU Classic with a 5-1 overall record after having defeated Wofford, 74-51, on Wednesday night. Their only loss came at Northwestern in a 73-68 contest on Friday, Nov. 25.
As a team, the Gators are shooting 46.8 percent (188-for-402) from the field for an average of 75.5 points per game. The Florida defense has done a solid job limiting opponents to 34.3 percent shooting (125-for-364), while allowing just 59.0 points per game. Florida holds a 9.2 rebounding margin over its opponents and leads its counterparts in assists per game (19.0 to 12.3), steals per game (11.0 to 9.0) and blocks per game (4.5 to 3.2).
The Gators have three double-figure scorers in Eleanna Christinaki (20.7 ppg), Ronni Williams (16.2 ppg) and Haley Lorenzen (14.2 ppg). Williams is also the team's leading rebounder with a total of 53 for an average of 8.8 per game. Dyandria Anderson has dished out a team-leading 35 assists, while Tyshara Fleming has posted 10 blocks to lead the team. Sydney Searcy and Delicia Washington have combined for 26 steals on the year with Searcy leading the Gators with 14 swipes.
SERIES VS. FLORIDA
Long Beach State and Florida will meet for just the second time in program history and for the first time since 2002. In their only meeting, the Gators edged the Beach 72-69 in Long Beach, Calif. The 49ers are looking to avenge their only loss to Florida and capture their first-ever win on Saturday.
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS
The hosts of the ASU Classic, No. 24 Arizona State, brings a 3-2 record into the tournament after having gone 1-1 in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout in Las Vegas, Nev. The Sun Devils dropped the first game of the tournament, 83-42, to No. 6 Maryland, before coming back and defeating St. John's, 54-41.
Arizona State is averaging 63.4 points per game, while allowing 55.2 on the year. In five games thus far, the Sun Devils are shooting 42.0 percent (120-for-286) from the field, while their opponents are shooting an almost identical 42.2 percent (111-for-263). ASU's defense has done an impressive job defending beyond the arc as the Sun Devils have limited their counterparts to a mere 17.0 percent (9-for-53) shooting fromthree-point range.
Sophie Brunner is the team's leading scorer with 10.0 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game. Brunner has started in all five games and is tied for the team lead with eight steals. Quinn Dornstauder leads the Sun Devils in rebounding with 5.6 boards per game, while averaging 6.6 points per game. Reili Richardson has contributed a team-best 19 assists on the year, while adding 7.6 points per game to go along with six steals.
SERIES VS. ARIZONA STATE
Long Beach State and Arizona State have faced off 17 times in program history and the Beach leads the all-time series 15-2. LBSU is 7-1 when playing the Sun Devils in Tempe, Ariz., while boasting an 8-1 record at home. If the two teams meet on Sunday, it will mark their first meeting since 2013 when ASU held off Long Beach State, 74-67 in overtime for the Sun Devils' only win over the 49ers in Tempe. Prior to the 2013 meeting, the two squads had not met since 1986.
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
Boston University heads into the ASU Classic with a 1-5 overall record after having collected its only win of the year agaisnt UMass Lowell by a score of 66-56 on Saturday, Nov. 26. The Terriers are 0-3 on the road this season and have not yet played a neutral site contest.
The Terriers are shooting 39.7 percent (125-for-315) from the field and averaging 55.2 points per game. Their opponents have scored 65.7 points per game while shooting 42.6 percent (136-for-319). Boston leads its opponents in assists as the Terriers have tallied 85 helpers to their counterparts' 72. They also own the edge in steals (9.5 spg to 8.0), as well as blocks (3.7 bpg to 3.5).
Sarah Hope is the Terriers' leading scorer as she averages 12.0 points per game. She also leads the team with 21 assists, and is tied for second with seven steals. Sophie Beaudry is Boston's leading rebounder with an average of 6.4 boards per game. She also adds 7.6 points per game and a team-leading 11 blocks to go along with 17 assists which is tied for second on the squad. Courtney Latham has grabbed a team-best 15 steals to lead the team, while adding 7.5 points per game, 5.3 rebounds per game and 17 assists.
SERIES VS. BOSTON UNIVERSITY
If Long Beach State and Boston University meet on Sunday, it will mark the first time in program history that the two teams have faced off on the hardwood.
