LONG BEACH, Calif. – Senior Jewelyn Sawyer had a big opening weekend as she notched a pair of double-doubles in as many games to lift Long Beach State women's basketball to a pair of road wins and collect her second-career Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor.
The Paramount, Calif., native led the Beach to a 97-93 overtime victory at Nevada in the season opener as she posted in 18 points, 12 rebounds and a steal. Sawyer shot 5-for-11 from the floor and sunk all of her free throw attempts (6-for-6), while draining a pair of three-pointers.
Sawyer, a six-foot guard/forward, came back two days later and helped the Beach to another win as she led the 49ers defense limiting Pepperdine to just 27.3 percent shooting in the game as LBSU pulled out a 44-41 win. She posted another double-double with 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while adding two assists and a steal.
