LBSU Sweeps Singles to Start CSUN Tournament

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - On day one of the 2016 Matador Collegiate Invitational, Long Beach State had a productive Friday at CSUN, going a perfect 3-0 in singles action. Junior Lena Pacholski and freshmen Maren Helgo and Natalia Munoz all won their individual matches and advanced into Saturday's quarterfinal round of their respective brackets.
Pacholski defeated Nozomi Matsuoka in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, to reach the Flight A quarters. Joining her in that round will be Helgo, who went the distance to defeat Utah State's Kate Tugarinova, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
Munoz was a winner by default in Flight B, receiving a free pass to the next round. But instead of sitting out the first round, Munoz found an exhibition match and defeated Utah State's Monika Van De Vondel, 6-0, 7-5.
In doubles, Pacholski and Munoz paired up and suffered an 8-4 defeat in their Flight A match. Helgo, meanwhile, partnered with Mari Udagawa of CSUN and claimed an 8-3 win over Cal State Fullerton's Makiba/Meng. LBSU's doubles lineup will rotate Saturday with Munoz partnering with Udagawa.
Action begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with one round of doubles, followed by consecutive rounds of singles play at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
