Beach Tennis Opens Play at Fall Tournament

Long Beach, Calif. - The Beach opened play at the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament on Friday at Rhodes Tennis Center, getting off to a solid start across the board. Long Beach State had six singles players and three doubles teams in action, going 5-1 in the first round of singles play and 5-1 overall in the first two rounds of doubles.
In Flight A of singles, senior Hayley Thompson scored a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory to advance through the round of 16, claiming one of the biggest win of the day for the Beach. Freshman Maren Helgo was also dominant in her match, dropping just a single game in a 6-0, 6-1 win in Flight B. Junior Lena Pacholski had to work hard for her win in Flight B, going toe-to-toe with Masako Makiba of Cal State Fullerton and gutting out a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory.
Senior Laura Eales won her match in Flight C, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals, and in Flight D, freshman Natalia Munoz won her Long Beach State debut with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win over UC Riverside's Kassie Troung.
Saturday will be a busy day for singles with both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds being played in all flights.
The Beach had a strong day in doubles, winning all three round of 16 matches then going 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Thompson and Pacholski went 2-0 in Flight A, winning their matches 6-3 and 6-2, respectively. Helgo and Gerard teamed up for a pair of wins in the top flight as well, winning 6-1 and 6-4, respectively. In Flight B, Eales and Munoz scored a 6-1 win in their first match before dropping a close 7-5 decision in the quarterfinals.
Saturday's action starts at 9 a.m. with singles play, followed by the semifinal round of doubles and another set of singles matches.
