FRESNO, Calif. - The Long Beach State men's golf kicked off the 2016-17 season at the Nick Watney Invitational, finishing day one in 14th place at the San Joaquin Country Club.
LBSU posted an opening round score of 314 to finish in 14th. The Beach returned in the second round with a 22-shot improvement for a 292.
Saint Mary's and BYU leads the field of 15 teams at 4-over 572, holding a one-shot lead over tournament host Fresno State (+5) in third and six strokes over Nevada (+6) in fourth.
Redshirt sophomore Joe Fryer was the top player for the Beach, tying for 39th at 6-over 148 after shooting rounds of 77 and 71.
Hunter Reed tied for 54th at 9-over (78-73), followed by Andres Gonzalez tied for 67th at 11-over (80-73) and Patrick Pockels tied for 71st at 12-over (79-75).
Kymer Li placed 86th at 19-over (84-77).
Tanner Dice, competing as an individual, tied for 71st at 12-over (80-74).
Three players share the lead at 3-under 139, leading the field of 89 players by one shot.
Final round play concludes on Tuesday with the 49ers teeing off at 8:30 a.m. from the 10th tee and will be paired with Pacific and Cal State Bakersfield.
