Beach Tennis Faces Tough Finish At Winter Classic

Long Beach, Calif. - The Beach was able to split its two doubles matches with CSUN, but it was a frustrating day in singles on Sunday at Rhodes Tennis Center. Julie Gerard was the lone winner for Long Beach in singles, facing off against a solid Oregon lineup.
"It was a disappointing way to end the weekend," said LBSU head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "We had a number of opportunities but didn't take them. We have definitely identified some areas that need improvement and we will be working hard over the next 2 weeks to make those adjustments for our first dual match."
Gerard picked up a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles against Alyssa Tobita of Oregon, finishing off a 3-0 weekend at singles, all in straight sets. There were plenty of competitive matches between the 49ers and the Ducks, but they all went the way of the visitors. Ebba Unden took Kennan Johnson to three sets, losing a tiebreaker in the third to drop a very narrow 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (0) decision.
Both Maeva Razakasoa and Alex Jones won their opening sets 6-2, but they were unable to turn that advantage into wins. Nia Rose came back for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Razakasoa at No. 1 singles and Paloma Gomez earned a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Jones at the other end of the lineup.
For the third straight day, Long Beach split the four doubles matches, winning the No. 2 and No. 3 matchups with CSUN. The No. 2 team of Hayley Thompson and Laura Eales won their third match in as many days with a 6-2 win over Vivian Lin and Skyla Alcon. At No. 3, Unden and Georgie Sanders picked up a 6-1 victory over Ki Kim and Mari Taslagyan.
The dual match portion of LBSU's schedule opens in two weeks when the Beach hosts San Francisco on Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. at Rhodes Tennis Center.
