BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Brock Lundquist homered in his first at bat but it didn't hold up as the Long Beach State fell 7-2 at Indiana on Saturday. Indiana used a four-run eighth to put away a close game and even the series.
The Dirtbags (25-21) carried the offensive momentum of the last two games into Saturday's first inning, hitting their seventh home run in the last three games. However, their hot bats were cooled after the first inning as Indiana chipped away and ultimately evened the series.
Lundquist homered in the first with Joey Sanchez on second base to give the Dirtbags an instant 2-0 lead. As the game went on, the Dirtbags didn't get much else going in the game as Indiana chipped away at the lead.
Craig Dedelow led the Hoosiers (27-20) on the comeback, going 2-for-3 with four runs batted in. He hit a solo homer in the second, tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and knocked a two-run double in the eighth to help put the game away.
After Lundquist's homer, the Dirtbags offense stalled. They managed just three hits and did not have a baserunner between the fourth and the eighth when Sanchez singled for the second time.
Meanwhile, Indiana used some small ball in the fourth and fifth to tie the game and take the lead. A leadoff single in the fourth was cashed in on Dedelow's sacrifice fly. A leadoff hit batter in the fifth moved up on a sacrifice fly and scored on Casey Rodrigue's single in the fifth.
Chris Mathewson limited the Hoosier opportunities through seven-plus innings. He allowed only three runs on five hits through the first seven innings but left after walking the leadoff batter in the eighth. Indiana turned that leadoff walk into a four-run outburst that put the game away.
Kyle Hart and Scott Effross combined to retire 12 Dirtbags in a row from the fourth to the eighth.
The Dirtbags and Hoosiers meet tomorrow for the rubber match at 10:05 a.m. (PT).
