SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The bats stayed hot in leading the Long Beach State Dirtbags to a 10-5 win at San Diego State on Monday. The win was the fifth in a row for the Dirtbags (18-10), who set a season-high for runs scored.
A big first inning set the tone and the Dirtbags scored at least a run in each of the last six innings to key the win. The Dirtbags had five extra base hits, including three doubles and two home runs. Zack Rivera, Alex Bishop and Daniel Jackson each had two RBI.
Jackson's pair of RBI came on one swing in the first inning. The Dirtbags already had two runs on the board thanks to Brock Lundquist's run-scoring double and Bishop's RBI single. Jackson then sent a two-run homer over the wall in left center to give LBSU a four-run lead before San Diego State (24-9) even had a turn at bat.
It was until the fourth that three doubles put two runs on the board for the Aztecs. The pair of runs started a scoring spree on both sides. Rivera got a run back in the fifth when he hit a monster solo homer to left center. He doubled and scored in the seventh as well.
The teams continued to trade runs back and forth as both sides put at least one run in every inning from the bottom of the fourth to the top of the eighth. The Dirtbags added another run in the ninth to put up their first double digit run total of the season.
Danny Sheehan led the offensive outburst for San Diego State with a 3-for-5 day that included two doubles, a run scored and an RBI.
The Aztecs used seven pitchers in the game, which combined for seven walks. The Dirtbags sent five pitchers to the mound with Darren McCaughan going four innings in his first collegiate start. Ryan Cruz pitched the next two and two-thirds to get the win.
Logan Lombana had a clutch performance out of the bullpen as he came in with the bases loaded in the seventh with the Dirtbags leading 8-5. SDSU already had a run across in the inning but he needed just one pitch to get Chase Calabuig to ground out to third.
Lombana went on to pitch a scoreless eighth as well and Tyler Radcliffe tossed a perfect ninth to close it out.
The Dirtbags stay on the road this weekend as they head to Big West-leading UC Irvine for a Black & Blue Big West series. The first game of the three-game series is on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
