IRVINE, Calif. -- A scoreless game needed extra innings to be decided but Long Beach State fell 1-0 as UC Irvine walked off with a 1-0 win in the 12th inning. With the loss, the Dirtbags (18-11, 4-3 Big West) saw their five-game winning streak come to an abrupt end.
Kyle Friedrichs and UCI starter Elliot Surrey dueled for eight innings before the bullpens took over. Friedrichs was again outstanding as he struck out eight over his eight innings and allowed just four hits. Only five Anteaters reached base against Friedrichs and only one reached as far as third. He retired 11 in a row between the third and the seventh.
Surrey only had two 1-2-3 innings in his seven and two-thirds but was able to keep the Dirtbags off the scoreboard. Long Beach State touché up Surrey for seven hits while drawing two walks but only one runner reached as far as third base against Surrey.
Eight of the Anteaters (20-10, 7-0 Big West) 12 hits in the game came in extra innings. With Ty Provencher on the mound, they roped back-to-back singles in the 10th and 11th but both came with two outs and runners were stranded on second and third as Provencher produced two inning-ending pop ups. He fanned three over three scoreless frames.
Eight of the Dirtbags 10 hits came in the first nine frames as Sam Moore allowed only two hits over the final three and two-thirds innings to pick up his third win. Joey Sanchez provided the Dirtbags greatest opportunity to score in extras when he reached third after leading off the 10th with his third single of the day. However, he was stranded there.
Logan Lombana came in to pitch the 12th but UCI strung together four consecutive singles to bring in the winning run. Jerry McClellan sparked the rally and scored the winning run when Kris Paulino roped a line drive single into right with the bases loaded.
With another scoreless start, Friedrichs now has a 0.39 ERA with 26 strikeouts and no walks in his first three Big West starts. He has spanned 23 and a third innings in those starts.
The Dirtbags and `Eaters will have a quick turnaround tomorrow as they meet at 1 p.m. for the second game of the three-game series.
