IRVINE, Calif. -- Brock Lundquist doubled four times but a pair of four-run innings dug too deep of a hole as Long Beach State fell 10-4 at UC Irvine on Saturday. The Dirtbags (18-12, 4-4 Big West) pounded out 13 more hits in the loss.
Lundquist was 4-for-5 in the game with four doubles to different parts of the field. He looped a doubled down the right field line in the second, sent a grounder over first base in the fourth, sent a shot to the right center gap in the eighth and hit one off the wall in left in the ninth. He is the first Dirtbag to double three or more times in a game since Brennan Metzger doubled three times against UCI in 2012.
Lundquist also scored twice and drove in a run. He scored the first run of the game in the fourth after leading off with his second double. He moved up to third on Daniel Jackson's single and Alex Bishop's walk loaded the bases. Tristan Mercadel hit a chopper to second to score Lundquist but that would be all the Dirtbags would get in the frame.
Tanner Brown was cruising through three innings but the game turned in the fourth as UCI (20-10, 8-0 Big West) exploded offensively. Brown had allowed just a single through the first three frames and struck out three of the first four batters looking. However, he surrendered back-to-back singles to open the fourth and Cameron Bishop smacked a one-out double to score two and give UCI the lead.
Another double, then single, then sacrifice fly scored another two runs for a 4-1 UCI lead. In the sixth, the Anteaters sent another eight men to the plate as two walks and three more hits led to four more runs and an 8-1 lead.
The Dirtbags got one back in the eighth when Lundquist scored on Nolan Meadows pinch hit single but UCI countered with two more runs to make the lead 10-2.
Jared James' leadoff triple, Garrett Hampson's second single and Lundquist's fourth double plated two for the Dirtbags in the ninth before the Anteaters were able to close the books on the their 15th consecutive win.
The Dirtbags put at least one runner on base in every inning except the third but stranded 11 runners on base. UCI matched the Dirtbags hit total. The loss marks the first time that the Dirtbags have dropped the first two games of a series.
Long Beach State concludes its Black & Blue Rivalry series tomorrow when the two teams meet again at 1 p.m.
