INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Long Beach State junior Kassidy Teare received an invitation to participate as an individual in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Tournament, it was announced on Monday afternoon.
"I'm extremely ecstatic for Kassidy and the women's golf program," head coach Joey Cerulle said. "It's been a long time for the program since we had a team or individual qualify for the postseason. I'm very happy for Kassidy as she has worked very hard these past three years to improve her game and become a better student-athlete. We're extremely thankful to our supporters from our friends, family, donors, alumni and athletic staff for their continued support of our program and enable players like Kassidy to get a chance to play in the postseason."
Teare was selected to play at the St. George, Utah Regional hosted by BYU, May 7-9, at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club. The native from Vista, Calif. was among 24 individuals to receive at-large bids along with 72 teams to play in one of four regional sites. Twenty-nine of the 72 teams are automatic qualifiers from conference championships, while 43 are at-large teams. The top six finishing teams in each regional and top three individuals not on one of those teams, will advance to the NCAA Championship.
The other three regionals include Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.; Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. and Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas. The six-day NCAA Women's Golf Championship is scheduled for May 22-27 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
Teare is one of three individuals selected from the Big West Conference to participate in the NCAA Tournament as Savannah Vilaubi of UC Riverside (St. George Regional) and Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton (Notre Dame Regional) received invitations.
Big West team champion UC Davis, who received the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament after winning the league championship last week, will be competing at the Notre Dame Regional.
Teare is only the second women's golfer from LBSU to qualify as an individual for the NCAA Regionals as former 49er All-American Kay Hoey qualified in 2005 as a freshman and 2007 as a junior. In both appearances, Hoey advanced out of the west regionals and into the NCAA Championships.
Teare was recently named First Team All-Big West, her second consecutive year she has been selected to the All-Big West team. She was a second-team honoree last season. Teare played in all 11 tournaments for the 49ers this past season, finishing with a scoring average of 74.44.
Teare recorded her best finish as a 49er this past spring at the LBSU-hosted Gold Rush presented by Southern California Ford Dealers at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, Calif., finishing runner-up and was just one stroke behind first-place. Teare also posted an impressive performance at the SDSU Farms Invitational match play tournament where she finished with a 3-1 record and helping the 49ers claim the consolation match title.
"I'm relieved and excited that I've achieved my goals from the beginning of the season to qualify for the postseason," Teare said. "But, it's also bittersweet emotions because I wish it was my team that qualified as well so we can compete together. I just wanted to thank everyone from Joey and Alexis (Edwards), to my family, friends and teammates to our great donors and staff."
