LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Top-seeded Long Beach State advanced to tomorrow's Big West championship match with a 4-1 comeback win over fifth-ranked CSUN on Saturday. The Beach surrendered the doubles point but used four straight set singles victories to put away the match.
Down a point in the match, Ebba Unden sparked the comeback with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2. Julie Gerard gave LBSU its first lead of the day when her 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 put the Beach up 2-1 in the match. Laura Eales brought the Beach within a point of clinching with a 6-1, 6-4 win in the No. 6 match.
Upset-minded CSUN did jump out to leads in a couple matches as CSUN's Mickey Hsu captured the first set in the No. 1 match and Ki Kim won the first set in the No. 4 match. Maeva Razakasoa and Hayley Thompson were each on track to push their individual matches into a third set but didn't need to as Karolina Rozenberg captured a hard-fought 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 to clinch the match for the Beach.
CSUN snuck away with the doubles point when its No. 1 duo won 8-5 and the No. 2 duo won 8-6. Razakasoa and Gerard captured the No. 3 match for the Beach by a score of 8-4 before CSUN clinched the point.
No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara pulled off a 4-3 upset of UC Irvine on the other side of the bracket and will face Long Beach State in tomorrow's championship match. First serve will be at 9 a.m. with the winner gaining the Big West's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament.
