CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Long Beach State women's tennis team finished off its three-match road trip with a 4-1 loss at Illinois on Thursday. Gusting winds in the area forced the match to be played indoors.

Julie Gerard grabbed the Beach's point with a straight set win in the No. 4 match. Gerard won 6-2, 6-1 over Grace Tapek to start off the singles portion of the match. However, Illinois rebounded to win the next three matches and clinch the team win. Maeva Razakasoa in the No. 1 match and Karolina Rozenberg in the No. 5 match both remained unfinished in a third set.

Ebba Unden pushed Melissa Kopinski to the brink in a pair of sets but suffered a heartbreaking 7-5, 7-5 loss in the No. 2 match. Laura Eales also dropped a heartbreaker in the No. 6 match. She fell 7-5 in the first set and lost in a tiebreak in the second set 7-6 (7-3).

Illinois grabbed the doubles point with a 6-3 win in the No. 1 match and a 6-4 win in the No. 2 match. After the point was clinched, Razakasoa and Gerard's close match at No. 3 remained unfinished.

The Beach returns home next week and returns to conference play. LBSU hosts UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. on Friday and can clinch a Big West title with a win.
