LONG BEACH - Long Beach State women's basketball head coach Jody Wynn has announced the signing of Alzena Henry (Portland, Ore.) and Tyla Turner (San Bernardino, Calif.) to National Letters of Intent. The duo will join the Beach in 2016-17.
Alzena Henry is a four-year starter and two-time all-league selection under head coach Jason Lowery at Jesuit High School in Portland, Ore. A 6-foot-1 post player, Henry led the Crusaders (23-6) to the 2014-15 Metro League title and a sixth-place finish in the Class 6A State Tournament. She averaged 13 points and 15 rebounds over four playoff games to earn first-team all-state tournament honors. Henry was also an academic all-star.
"Alzena will bring our team a physical presence in the paint - scoring down low and rebounding, while she also has the ability to face the basket," Wynn said. "She is a wonderful person who is serious about becoming the best she can be on the court and in the classroom."
Tyla Turner is a four-year varsity letterwinner under head coach Mark Lehman at Cajon High School. As a junior, she averaged 14.6 points, 9.4 assists, 7.5 rebounds and 6.6 steals per game to help the Cowboys claim a share of the Citrus Belt League title. Cajon also advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Open Playoffs and to the CIF Southern California Regional semifinals. A 5-foot-5 guard, Turner garnered first-team all-county, first-team All-Inland Empire and first-team all-league honors. She has also been named to the honor roll three years in a row.
"Speed, speed and more speed - Tyla has a great motor and loves to defend, hawk the ball and take charges," Wynn said. "She is a tough guard who can get to the basket, shoot the pull-up and knock down the three. Like Alzena, Tyla is a very motivated student-athlete both on and off the court, and will be a great addition to our program and Beach family."
