Long Beach State Starts Strong at Beach Tennis Tournament

Long Beach, Calif. - Led by a perfect 7-0 singles record, Long Beach State had a solid day of tennis to open the 2015 Beach Tennis Fall Tournament. The Beach also went 5-2 in doubles play, sending a pair of teams to semifinals action tomorrow.
Maeva Razakasoa (6-0, 6-2) and Hayley Thompson (6-1, 6-1) both picked up lopsided wins in the top singles bracket. Thompson also won both of her doubles matches in Flight A alongside partner Laura Eales, who was a 6-3, 6-3 winner in Flight B singles.
Ebba Unden advanced through round one in Flight B with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Lana Macukat of Grand Canyon, and also reached the semifinals of Flight B doubles with partner Antonella Santeusanio.
In Flight C, Julie Gerard had to overcome some turmoil after losing her opening set against Wisconsin's Caroline Hall, 6-4. She was dominant after her initial slip-up though, winning the next two sets 6-1, 6-0. Georgie Sanders also closed strong against Cat Orfanos, winnins 7-5, 6-0 in Flight C. Rounding out doubles action, Ella Monsey topped Ashley Knecht to advance to the Flight D semifinals.
The only losses on the day for Long Beach came in doubles, as Razakasoa and Gerard slipped in their second match against Big West rivals Alexis Valenzuela and Camille DeLeon. In Flight B, Sanders/Mosley lost in their only match following an opening round bye, falling to another conference foe, Mari Taslagyan and Scout Shutter from Northridge.
Action resumes Saturday at Rhodes Tennis Center with doubles action at 9 a.m. and singles the rest of the day.
