Beach Finish Eighth To End SoCal Tournament

No. 8 Long Beach State dropped the first match against UC Santa Barbara 12-6, which left the 49ers to fight for seventh place facing a familiar opponent. No. 7 UC Irvine pushed the Beach to another overtime battle, which LBSU lost in the end 9-8 to finish eighth in the SoCal Tournament.

In the first match, LBSU could not stop the Gauchos' offense as No. 6 UCSB cruised by the 49ers.

The first quarter against UCSB went back and forth with the 49ers outscoring the Gauchos 3-2. Austin Stevenson shined in the first, scoring his first two goals of the match to put the Beach on the board. Chandler Kaltenbach also added a goal at the 1:21 mark to give LBSU the lead going into the second.

The 49ers were blanked in the second quarter, however, as UCSB added to more goals to lead the Beach going into halftime 4-3.

The Gauchos scored a pair of goals to increase their lead until Chandler Kaltenbach scored his second goal of the match in the third quarter to cut the 49ers deficit to two, down 6-4 at the five minute mark. UCSB scored another two goals until Stevenson notched his hat trick with 21 seconds left in the third. The 49ers went into the fourth down 8-5.

UCSB continued to outscore the Beach in the fourth, adding another four goals compared to the 49ers one by senior Dimitrios Lappas.

Senior Pavo Ljepopio had six saves for the Beach while Liam Lenihan had 15 for UCSB.

Now fighting for seventh place, the 49ers had to face No. 8 UC Irvine, who has the pushed the Beach to their limits in their two previous meetings this season. LBSU is 1-1 against them so far.

The 49ers were outscored in the first 3-2. Chandler Kaltenbach and Max Cusator both scored for the Beach in the opening quarter.

The Anteaters jumped ahead in the second scoring four goals to LBSU's two, leading 7-4 going into halftime. Stevenson and Lovro Miocevic added the two goals for the Beach.

LBSU caught up a little in the third with goals from Chandler Kaltenbach and Duncan Lynde, cutting the deficit to two going into the fourth down 8-6.

Goals from Lappas and Stevenson tied the game for the Beach, forcing overtime.

Both were held scoreless in the first overtime, but sophomore Kyle Trush delivered the game-winning goal for UCI in the final seconds of the second overtime.

The Beach play their home opener this Thursday in a double-header against Occidental College and UC San Diego.
