BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A 21-5 run to end the second set highlighted a Long Beach State sweep of Fresno State in the opening match of the Roadrunner Classic. The 25-21, 25-15, 25-16 win extend LBSU's win streak to four matches and its set win streak to 12.
Chisom Okpala led the Beach (9-3) with 11 kills on .688 hitting while Bre Mackie had 10 kills on .350 hitting. The 49ers hit .333 as a team, including a .500 mark in the second set, while holding Fresno State (5-7) to .080 hitting.
The Beach had 42 digs and 14.5 blocks in holding its opponent to less than a .200 hitting percentage for the 10th match in a row. Mackie's eight blocks led the Beach effort at the net while Tyler Jackson led the back row with 12 digs.
The first and third sets belonged mainly to the Beach but Fresno State's hot start in the second set put the result in a bit more doubt. The Bulldogs scored the first three points on a block, ace and Carly Scarbrough kill to jump out to the early lead.
At its greatest point, LBSU trailed 10-4 after another service ace. The tides turned as the next serve landed outside the court and the Beach embarked on a 6-0 run to tie the set at 10-10. The run continued through the rest of the set as LBSU rolled out a 21-5 run to claim the set.
The Beach will put its winning streak on the line tonight against the hosts of the tournament, Bakersfield, at 7:30 p.m.
