SACRAMENTO - Long Beach State saw two of its current track stars and a pair of former Big West champions compete at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships this past weekend at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.
On Thursday, upcoming junior Chris Enriquez was 13th overall in the 10000m (29:57.43). He was the top collegiate finisher and qualified for the 2014 NACAC U-23 Championships, which will be held in Kamloops, B.C., Aug. 8-10. Enriquez had a remarkable sophomore campaign as he was an All-Big West performer and NCAA Championship qualifier in both cross country and track. He also garnered All-America honorable mention recognition in the 10K at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Former 49er Gabe Hilbert and soon-to-be senior Chris Low both competed in the 800m at the USATF Outdoor Championships. Hilbert, the 2013 Big West champion, secured the final time qualifier with a mark of 1:48.03 to advance to the semifinals where he finished 12th. Low placed fourth in his heat and 16th overall in the preliminary round. Low claimed the 2014 Big West 800m title and also garnered first-team All-America honors with a seventh-place showing at the NCAA Championships.
On Sunday, LBSU alum Ben Woodruff moved on to the final round in the men's javelin where he came in eighth. His best throw of the day was on his first attempt where he hit 235-06. Woodruff qualified for the U.S. national championships with a lifetime-best 258-00 at the Tucson Elite Throws Classic in May. While at The Beach, Woodruff was a two-time Big West champion (2011-12), and also earned All-America honors in 2012.
Upcoming junior Willie Alexander was entered in Sunday's men's long jump, but did not compete. Alexander was the 2014 NCAA runner-up in the long jump.
