LONG BEACH - The 49er track & field program saw 29 of its current and former student-athletes graduate this week at Long Beach State's 2014 commencement ceremonies.
Strong academic performance has been a common theme in head coach Andy Sythe's 25 years at the helm of the LBSU track & field/cross country program. The women have consistently earned national all-academic recognition from the USTFCCCA as a result of a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.00 or better. The men's squad also received their first-ever USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honor in 2013. In addition, over 300 student-athletes have garnered academic all-conference accolades under Sythe's tenure.
During the 2014 indoor season, twenty-five 49ers were named to the MPSF All-Academic Team, including five of this year's graduating seniors - Niko Althaus, Meghan Foley, Spencer Gray, Kayla Kamaka and Bryce Van Boxtel. The 2014 Big West All-Academic Teams have not been announced yet.
