BACK TO THE BIG WEST AS DIRTBAGS HEAD TO DAVIS
A six-game stretch of nothing but Big West games kicks off this weekend when Long Beach State heads north to UC Davis for three games. The Dirtbags have won each of their last two weekend series, including a Big West series, and are 2-1 in the conference. The Aggies come in to the weekend with a 14-15 overall record and are 1-7 in the Big West. Last weekend, they were able to take a game from Cal State Fullerton but dropped the series.
PATRON IS ONE HIT AWAY
Senior Ino Patron's doubled on Tuesday against LMU for the 199th hit of his career. He is just one hit away from becoming the 11th Dirtbag to join the 200-hit club. Mike Hofius and Brad Davis (a former major leaguer and current Dirtbag Undergraduate Assistant Coach) were the last to reach the mark in the 2004 season. Davis finished with exactly 200 hits (10th all-time) and Hofius ranks ninth with 204 hits. He has already entered the record book for games played and started in a Dirtbag uniform and could end up very near to the top of both lists. His 195 games played ranks 32nd among all active players in the NCAA Division I.
PRIGATANO IS THE BIG WEST'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK
In his junior season, Richard Prigatano garnered his first Player of the Week honors for leading the Dirtbags to a 2-1 series win over UCLA. Prigatano had six RBI for the second week in a row to raise his season total to 27 RBI. The junior outfielder has already surpassed his career-best for RBI in a season and now ranks third in the conference. His batting average also rose to .340 after going 6-for-12 last weekend and he notched his team-leading 11th stolen base.
BUCKLEY HITS THE CENTURY MARK
Head Coach Troy Buckley hit the century mark last weekend with win Nos. 100 and 101. The Dirtbags 4-0 shutout of UCLA on Saturday was the 100th career victory for the fourth year head coach and Sunday's comeback win was 101. He is now 101-96 in leading the Dirtbags and owns a 44-34 record in Big West games.
GOOSE EGGS AGAINST ROHRBACH
Sophomore Andrew Rohrbach had just a few innings pitched under his belt when he transferred to Long Beach State from the College of the Canyons. He has quickly become a force for the Dirtbags on the mound with a 1.92 ERA and a 4-1 record through his first eight starts. He is averaging over six innings per start and opposing lineups are hitting just .202 against him. Rohrbach has pitched at least eight innings without surrendering an earned run on three separate occasions - a complete game shutout at Wichita State, a nine-inning quality start against Indiana and another eight scoreless innings start against UCLA. Despite Rohrbach's precision on the mound, the Dirtbags ended up losing in the 11th inning of both the Indiana and UCLA game.
KEEP COUNTING ON MILLISON
Senior Ryan Millison has been solid throughout the first half of the season for Long Beach State. After another four scoreless inning start on Tuesday, Millison's ERA has dropped to 0.76 for the season. He has thrown seven consecutive scoreless innings and hasn't allowed an earned run in the last 14 innings. Since allowing eight hits in his first three appearances (six innings), Millison has allowed just five hits in the last 17.2 innings. He picked up his first save of the season last Saturday with a perfect two inning outing against UCLA.
HUTTING, HILL RE-INVIGORATE TRIPLE PARTY
The Dirtbags had their 13th triple of the season on Sunday off the bat of Eric Hutting. Hill followed that up with a triple to right center on Tuesday for his Big West leading sixth three-bagger of the season. Hutting scorched a ball off the wall in left field and wound up on third after it banked back over the left fielder's head for the first triple of his career. Hutting is the seventh member of the Dirtbags to hit a triple this season. The Dirtbags' 14 triples rank 11th in the nation.
NOT THE FRESHMAN FIRST HALF
Freshman Garrett Hampson has been impressive through the first half of his first collegiate season. The freshman phenom from Reno, Nev. leads the Dirtbags in hits, batting average, doubles, slugging percentage and runs scored. His 45 hits are also the second-most among all hitters in the Big West. Among freshmen nationwide, Hampson ranks sixth with 45 hits in the NCAA Division I. His .344 batting average is also tops among freshmen in the Big West as are his nine doubles for the year.
YES, WE'RE REALLY CALLED THAT
The OFFICIAL nickname of the Long Beach State baseball program is the Dirtbags.
