SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Setter Jenelle Hudson did a little bit of everything in leading the Long Beach State women's volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 sweep at UC Santa Barbara on Friday. Hudson distributed 31 assists to the tune of a season-high .406 team hitting percentage.
Hudson also took part in the offense with eight kills on nine attacks for an .889 hitting percentage. She also served up an ace. She also pitched in on the defensive ends with eight digs and a solo block.
Chisom Okpala led the attack with 13 kills in the sweep and hit .545. Alex Reid had six blocks to lead another solid team blocking effort and Tyler Jackson had 10 digs.
The Beach (15-5, 5-0 Big West) scored the first point in all three sets and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and third sets. UCSB (8-9, 3-3 Big West) fought back to take the lead and jumped up 11-9. After a Long Beach State timeout, the 49ers rattled off four consecutive points and never looked back to take the lead in the match.
UCSB came out and controlled the second set early on. However, Hudson guided the Beach attack to a .533 hitting percentage in the set as it rolled late in the set to the big win. A .438 hitting percentage in the third spurred another Beach win as it controlled the set wire-to-wire.
On the defensive end, LBSU held the Gauchos to .131 hitting on the night. Britton Taylor's 10 kills led the Gaucho attack and Chanel Hoffman had nine.
Sophie Bukovec pitched in seven on .250 hitting while Reid pitched in seven more.
The Beach ran its winning streak to five matches for its third five-match win streak of the season. It will look to extend the streak to six matches when it travels to Cal Poly tomorrow for a 7 p.m. match.
