LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Long Beach State Dirtbags closed out their alumni weekend with an Alumni Game on Saturday at Blair Field. The Dirtbags defeated the Alumni 5-1 in a nine-inning contest.
Andrew Rohrbach started on the mound and pitched the majority of the game to pick up the win. He held the Alumni scoreless despite finding himself in a jam in the third. Juan Favela (2011-12) and Jonathan Kim (2011-12) had back-to-back hits to open the inning and put runners on second and third. Rohrbach responded with three quick outs that kept the game scoreless.
The Dirtbags scored in the fourth without recording a hit. Three straight walks loaded the bases with no outs but the Alumni were able to cut down a runner at home for the first out of the inning. Michael Hill scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run and Zack Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to score another Dirtbag run before the inning came to a close.
It wasn't until the seventh that the Dirtbags were able to put more runs on the board and take a commanding lead. With former MLB pitcher Abe Alvarez in his second inning of work on the mound, Colton Vaughn drove in two runs and Johnny Bekakis drove in Vaughn for 5-0 lead.
Recent grad Zack Miller hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the alums only run of the game, scoring Michael Marjama.
Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Adam Wilk tossed a short inning on the mound as did former A's pitcher Bobby Cramer. Recent grads Brennan Metzger, TJ Mittelstadt, Jeff McNeil, Juan Avila, Jon Maciel and Eddie Megallon also participated in the game. Matt Hibbert (2010-11), Brandon Godfrey (2005-08), Matt Cline (2006-07) and Brad Davis (2002-04) were also on the field for the alums.
Troy Watson (2010-11) and Kirk Singer (2009-11) filled out the pitching staff.
The Long Beach State season begins at home on Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. when the Dirtbags host Vanderbilt.
