49ers places seventh at Bruin Wave Invitational

TARZANA, Calif. - Long Beach State recorded a 314 in Tuesday's final round of the fourth annual Bruin Wave Invitational at the El Caballero Country Club to finish in seventh place.

LBSU completed the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 76-over par 940, finishing ahead of No. 31 Denver and No. 40 UNLV by 10 shots as the Rebels and Pioneers tied for 10th at 86-over. The 49ers finished four strokes ahead of eighth-place Washington State (+80) and seven shots ahead of San Diego State (+83) in ninth.

Despite finishing nine shots behind sixth-place No. 21 Oklahoma State (+67), the 49ers were one-stroke better in the final round as the Cowgirls recorded a 315.

This was the 49ers' best Bruin Wave performance of the four years they have participated in. LBSU improved by 18 shots from last year's score as the 49ers tied for ninth with Wisconsin at 94-over. In 2011, LBSU finished in 11th at 66-over and placed 14th in 2010 (+81).

Top-ranked USC (+20) won the team title by two shots over tournament co-host No. 20 UCLA (+22) and 12 strokes over No. 8 Arizona (+32) in third. Tournament co-host No. 33 Pepperdine (+58) came in fourth, followed by Oregon State (+60) in fifth.

Freshman Shawnee Martinez paced the 49ers for the second time in three tournaments, shooting a final round 77 to tie for 23rd at 15-over 231.

Martinez started the morning off at the par-5 No. 1 hole. She would go onto collect six pars and three bogeys for a 3-over on the front-nine. For the third straight round in the tournament, the Modesto native would not record a single birdie on the front.

Making the turn to the back-nine, Martinez picked up her first birdie on the par-3 10th and her second on the par-5 17th. She would record five more pars, one bogey and one double-bogey on the last hole.

Sophomore Chaewon Park shot a 79 to finish in 32nd at 19-over, while senior Simone Hoey carded another 81 to finish in 41st at 23-over.

Freshman Kassidy Teare finished with a strong performance, turning in her best round of the tournament with a 77, a six-shot improvement from Monday's second round 83. Teare moved up the standings from 59th to tie for 42nd, completing the tournament at 25-over.

Junior Rochelle Chan (+28) shot an 86 to tie for 52nd.

Annie Park of USC captured individual medalist with a 1-under 215, winning by two strokes over two players tied for second.

LBSU returns to action Mar. 31-Apr. 2, taking part in the SDSU Farms Invitational at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe.
