LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Erin Jones-Wesley picked up a win in game one and a save in game two in Long Beach State's doubleheader sweep of Ohio on Wednesday afternoon. The 49ers won game one 3-0, and picked up a 6-4 game two victory.
Jones-Wesley, the reigning Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week, moved her season record to 10-3 with the win. The save was the first of her career. Long Beach State improved its record to 20-10, while Ohio fell to 10-11. The 49ers host Canisius in a doubleheader on Friday with the first game starting at 1 p.m. at the 49er Softball Complex.
Game 1: Long Beach State 3, Ohio 0
Jones-Wesley pitched a complete game four-hitter to push the 49ers to the win. Fellow freshmen Hannah De Gaetano (3-for-4, 1 RBI) and Karli Sandoval (2-for-2, 2 RBI) combined for five hits and all three RBI in Long Beach State's win.
The 49ers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. De Gaetano delivered a two-out RBI single to centerfield to score sophomore Bree Stephan. Sandoval made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third with a two-run double off the top of the left field wall scoring Liz Javier and Christina Schallig.
Jones-Wesley struck out seven, while walking just two. The shutout was the fifth of the season for Jones-Wesley. Emily Wethington (8-4) took the loss for the Bobcats.
Game 2: Long Beach State 6, Ohio 4 (6 innings -Rain)
Jones-Wesley got out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning without giving up a run to help the 49ers hold off the Bobcats in a rain-shortened game. Jones-Wesley inherited the bases loaded situation after entering the game following a short rain delay. The freshman got Melissa Bonner to ground weakly back to the mound where she threw to Sandoval at home for the second out. Jones-Wesley then struck out Chelsea Hortman to end the inning. Long Beach State was threatening in the bottom of the sixth inning when the game was called because of heavy rain.
The 49ers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to some help from Bobcat pitcher Caitlin Colvin, who walked five and gave up one hit in an inning of work. After a leadoff groundout by Megan Denio, Colvin walked the next four batters--De Gaetano, Schallig, Nalani St. Germain, and Javier--to give the 49ers a 1-0 lead. Caitrin DeBaun drove in Schallig with a ground out to second to make it 2-0, and then Stephan singled to center scoring St. Germain before Javier was thrown out at the plate trying to score.
Ohio got one back in the fourth on a solo home run by Raven King, her second of the season, but the 49ers rallied for two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Alisha Rosen made it 4-1 when she scored on a wild pitch after walking earlier in the inning, and then St. Germain added a RBI single to right field to put the 49ers back on top 5-1.
Ohio scratched together two more runs in the top of the fifth inning of LBSU starter Brooke Turner. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Hortman and Sara Clark cut the 49er lead to 5-3.
The 49ers pushed the lead back to 6-3 in their half of the fifth thanks to a Bobcat error. Javier, who singled to start the inning, scored on a dropped fly ball by right fielder Biz Eyrise with two outs to give LBSU some cushion.
OU rallied in the top of the sixth scoring a run and loading the bases off of Taylor Petty, who replaced Turner after the fifth. With the rain falling, Petty struggled to throw strikes because of the wet ball. The junior hit two of the first four batters she faced and gave up a single to another to load the bases with one out. Petty then gave up a run-scoring single to Paige Kemezis as the Bobcats climbed to within two runs, 6-4.
Long Beach State coach Kim Sowder turned to the freshman, Jones-Wesley, who got out of the inning. Turner (7-3) picked up the win for the 49ers, while Colvin (1-6) was charged with the loss.
