LONG BEACH - Sophomore women's golfer Simone Hoey was named Long Beach State Co-Athlete of the Week for her performance at last week's Gold Rush tournament in Yorba Linda.
Hoey (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga HS) recorded her first career tournament win claiming the individual medalist by six-strokes over teammate Monica Villarreal (second-place). Hoey finished the tournament at 3-over-par 219, recording rounds of 73-74-72.
"Winning my first tournament is a blessing especially when it is our own event that started off the season," Hoey said. "I'm going to use this win as motivation to work harder and focus more in tournaments that are coming up."
"We are so proud of Simone and her outstanding play," 49er head coach Joey Cerulle said. "Her hard work is beginning to pay off and I can see her really making a big splash this semester with the rest of our events."
The 49ers return to action on Monday, Feb. 28, traveling to Santa Clarita for the three-day Bruin Wave Invitational hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine.
