LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State track & field team held its 21st annual Black & Gold Meet on Saturday, Dec. 10, with the Gold team edging the Black team, 214-209.
There were 34 performances that were among the 49ers' Black & Gold Meet all-time top 10 list. Three athletes also established meet records in their respective events. Katrina Graves-Johnson cleared 5-08 in the women's high jump, while Phylicia Johnson had a leap of 18-03 in the long jump (10-step approach). Ben Woodruff also notched a meet record of 220-10 in the men's javelin (full approach).
"Our annual Black & Gold Meet is our major fall event that transitions us into our indoor and outdoor seasons," 49er head coach Andy Sythe said. "We have high expectations this year for both our men's and women's programs and this group shows the potential to achieve some lofty goals in 2012. Our alumni and families brought a lot of enthusiasm to the event and the rivalry generated by our athletes created the energetic environment we strive for to help us perform."
In addition to the Black & Gold Meet, Long Beach State also hosted the annual Alumni Meet, Future 49er Kids Meet and Twilight Distance Carnival. There were a total of 425 participants over the four meets and more than 200 people attended the post-meet barbecue that was catered by Naples Rib Company.
Long Beach State officially begins the indoor season on the last weekend of January when it competes in the Air Force Multi-Events (Jan. 26-27), Washington Invitational (Jan. 27-28) and Air Force Team Challenge (Jan. 28).
