
49ers fall to UC Irvine in critical MPSF match

Irvine, Calif. - UCUC Irvine (14-9, 2-4) defeats Long Beach State by a score of 13-12 in a key conference battle at the UCI Aquatics Center. Trent Baxter and Aleksandar Petrovic both scored a game-high six goals in the contest.
In a high scoring affair, Petrovic and Baxter went shot for shot, with UC Irvine winning for a sixth consecutive time.
Petrovic's six goals in the contest makes him 21st on the all time scoring list at Long Beach State, with 111 career goals.
LBSU closed within one, on a Petrovic goal, with 3:58 remaining, but time ran out before the team could complete the comeback.
UC Irvine tied the game entering the intermission at six goals each. The Anteaters rode a strong third quarter to the victory. UCI jumped up by a three-goal lead, 9-6 with only two minutes remaining in the period and the 49ers could not recover.
Long Beach State got out to a hot start, scoring first in the contest and finishing the first quarter with a 4-3 lead.
Nick Rascon added three goals, Dan Matulis scored a pair, and Devin Mefford with one goal rounded out the scoring for LBSU.
The loss drops Long Beach State to (14-7, 1-4) on the season before an important battle against conference opponent Stanford, Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at the Campus Pool.
