LBSU places fifth at Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Freshman Monica Umpant fired a career and a tournament low 68 in the final round of the Price's "Give `Em Five Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. to make a significant jump in the standings to tie for 17th place.
Umpant recorded a 77 in the first two rounds and was tied for 45th going into today's final 18 holes at the par-72, 6,258 yard New Mexico State University Golf Course. Umpant recorded another eagle on Wednesday, nailing down a 35-foot putt just outside the green on the par-5, 16th hole. She was the only player to card a total of two eagles for the tournament.
LBSU improved by six strokes in the final round for a 295 to finish in 5th. The 49ers finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament at 19-over 883.
Baylor (-4) won the team championship by one-shot over second-place Idaho (-3) and 15 shots over North Texas (+11) in third. Colorado State finished in fourth at 16-over.
LBSU had two other players finish in the top-20 as senior Monica Villarreal and sophomore Rochelle Chan also tied for 17th. Chan, Umpant and Villarreal finished the tournament at 6-over 222. Chan shot a 76, while Villarreal turned in a 77 and was one of six players to record 38 pars for the tournament.
Junior Simone Hoey shot a 76 to tie for 27th at 8-over and senior Noelle Zavaleta carded a 77 to tie for 45th at 13-over.
Two 49ers playing as individuals, freshman Bow-Kay Salotti recorded a 79, tying for 45th at 13-over. And sophomore Ashley Greer (+23) turned in her best round of the tournament with a solid 77 to move up in the standings seven spots to tie for 74th.
Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho and Jaclyn Jansen of Baylor shared individual medalist honors as both players finished at 5-under 211.
The 49ers return to action, Oct. 24-26, traveling to the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
