49ers finish in fifth place at Mary Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Long Beach State women's golf team shot a 23-over-par 311 in Sunday's final round of the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich., finishing in fifth place. The 49ers held onto a two-stroke lead over Big Ten Conference power Michigan as the Wolverines finished in sixth.
Junior Monica Villarreal continued with her consistent performance, as she was the top player for the 49ers, tying for 21st with a 233 (+17). Villarreal carded a 78 in Sunday's final round at the par-72, 6,316 yard Forest Akers West Golf Course, recording one birdie and seven bogeys.
Sophomore Simone Hoey fired a 77, collecting three birdies and six bogeys with double bogey at the par-five 8th hole. Hoey finished at 19-over for the tournament, moving up in the standings from 36th to tie for 28th.
Freshman Rochelle Chan and senior Lindsey McAtee tied for 39th as both players finished with a 238 (+22). Chan was eight-over 80, while McAtee recorded her best round of the tournament shooting a 76. McAtee tallied three birdies for the day.
Junior Noelle Zavaleta shot an 80 for a 239 (+23), finishing tied for 42nd and senior Reina Rogers, playing as an individual, recorded her best round of the tournament with a 79, finishing with a 243 (+27) to place 51st.
Notre Dame won the team championship with a score of 890 (+26) as the Fighting Irish held onto a five-shot lead over second place Kent State (895), followed by tournament host Michigan State (896) in third and Iowa State (904) in fourth.
Nicole Zhang of Notre Dame won the individual medalist honors by a comfortable eight strokes, finishing with a 207 (-9).
The 49ers return to action Oct. 11-12, as they travel to Owasso, Okla., for the Dale McNamara Invitational.
